Two years ago I bought a Super Vinci. I thought I had bought my last shotgun because of the modular design. I can't find the benelli parts to make a specific turkey gun.(pistol grip stock and shorter barrel. My gun has the standard stock and 28" barrel. I like the gun it shoots well. I just don't like it as a woods gun.

My wish list would include:
-22" or 24" barrel
-pistol grip
-great pattern
-mount a FF3
Guns I'm considering:
SX3 cantilever turkey (I can't find much info on pattern)
Mossy 835(the forearm rattle, placement of safety)
Mossy 935 (heavy, placement of safety)
Remington 870 SPS( I've held the gun and not that impressed)

I need recommendations. I am more confused than when I started looking for a dedicated turkey gun.

Midwest Gun Works has the steady grip stock for the Vinci/Super Vinci if your still looking for one.

Not on your list, but I'm personally very fond of the Weatherby shotguns. http://www.weatherby.com/products/shotguns/pa-459-turkey.html

Would you consider an 11-87 with the Shur shot stock?

With the available chokes and shells everybody makes a good shooting gun.

K9Doc

SX3 would be a good choice.
I also second the Weatherby.
That being said, I don't own either.
My Go To Gun is a Benelli M2 in 20 ga

Mossberg 835 tactical turkey
Mossberg 935 pistol grip turkey
The forearm rattler w/ the 835 is not a problem it dosent rattle when u hunt with only if u shake it or something crazy, some of the older single action bar models rattled pretty badly but the quality of the newer 835's is  just as good as I it's always been or better it's not like they rattle when you walk, and how often do you shake your gun when hunting. And the safety placement tie not a big deal you can get a steel xt ended safety from brownells for 20$ and that takes away the safety issue, w/ a little practice you can turn that safety off just a bout as quick as a cross bolt safety, and on a hunting gun it's even less of an issue bc all you have to do is turn off the safety once you get completely set up. That being said both of theses will fit the bill on you wish list won't break the bank and will pattern as good or better as anybody's setup you will find -Tim

Just got back from one of my local stores and they have a Thumbhole 835 with a 20" barrel. How does the 20" barrel pattern? Is it temperamental to choke and ammo? Gun is only $420 hard to pass that up.

Anyone have experience with the Thumbhole Mossberg's?
Can I change that to a pistol grip if I don't like?

daymude7288

My cousin has that same combo thumbhole 20".  That thing flat out shoots with kicks choke and longbeard xr #6

jordanz7935

The only thing about the thumbhole stock is that you have to take your hand out of the thumbhole to manipulate the safety. Im not sure if one of those oversized safetys would help with that or not. I think a 20" Barrel would make a nice handy turkey gun. If you get it and dont like the thumbhole, you could easily sell the stock and put a regular buttstock on the gun. There are quite a few aftermarket stock options for the 835 as well. Good luck.

From the receiver to the tip of the barrel is this gun the same as the 835 tactical turkey?

The SX3 Longbeard would fit your bill.
Love to hunt the King of Spring!

why not just buy a 24" barrel and a pistol grip stock for the vinci? I find those items somewhat easy when looking online. would be cheaper then an SX3 unless you just want a new gun.

mrhays9

I can't find the 24" barrel. I can find the stock at 1 retailer. If you can point me in the right direction on the barrel. I think that would be my plan.

The 835 I own, the ones I've seen n shot have never rattled. The 500s do. The 835 in my opinion is one of, if not the best factory gun out there. The forcing cones are already open, barrel oversized, that gives your 3-1/2" loads room to survive a trip down range resulting in normally superior patterns. Mine patterns as well as my sp-10 n is much lighter. Plus in factory ammo those loads aren't too far off. Since I've gotten an 835 any hunt I haven't used it on has been not so much about killing a bird. Just an fyi. Go pattern one n see, after all that's what it's about
