Just got back from my annual hunt in Kansas. My main objective of this hunt was to get my 10 yr old son his 1st turkey. It happened less than an hour after we got in the field. We set up in a huge cornfield and heard a bird gobbling in a pasture near by. I hit the box call with some loud yelps and he answered immediately. Moments later he was standing in the woods not 10yrds from us. We sat still and he eventually walked into the field and my son shot him at six steps and he had his 1st turkey. It was a jake but he thought it was the biggest turkey ever.
On Saturday evening I went out alone while son stayed at camp and played with another kid who made the trip. Later in the evening I watched a gobbler walk all the way across a large plowed field with a hen. I watched him walk in the woods and knew where to setup the next morning. The next morning I set up about 75yds from his roost tree. Got him to answer me while he was on the limb and knew I might be in business. After an hour he walked up the wood line in the edge of the field with 5 hens. He gobbled sparingly but answered my calls. When he got to 27yds I shot him with a load of magblends. 9in beard 1in spurs 20lbs.
Monday we woke up to high wind and snow so everyone slept in. At mid-mornig we hopped in the truck and rode around checking crop fields on the property. we spotted three birds walking in corn stubble. My son and I got out and set up. I made one call and the birds ran to us and my son got his second jake. I've never seen a kid smile as much and is now hooked on turkey hunting.
Trying to call in a longbeard.

Good Job! Looks like you've successfully corrupted the kid for life.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons. However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.
