Can my pattern be better?

Hey guys.

First off, holy cow.  What a ton of good information on this board.

Ok, like many, I shoot a Mossberg 835 for my turkey gun and absolutely love it.  Currently I use a Primos Jellyhead choke tube with Nitro H517 4x5x7's.  My pattern, though I've never counted my pellet count, is very good.  Its never failed to take a turkey down cleanly.  But after reading several posts about different choke tubes and combinations, I'm wondering if I can improve my pattern?  I would like to stay away from doing anything real major, like stuff with the forcing cone.  I've read a lot about the Indian Creek Black Diamond choke and was wondering if anyone has compared the Jellyhead to the IC.  Or if there is even another choke people are having excellent results with.

I do remember someone who was very knowedgeable said I will get a better pattern with the IC, but cant find the post anywhere.

I have shot the same nitro combination in my 835/935s its a solid load and pattern. IC didn't shoot much better if any for the money. Only combo that's been better for me is the star dot choke with nitros and TSS loads with almost any choke.

If I were getting a nice even pattern with your current. Setup, I wouldn't change anything.  some of the high count target shots on here come from 2 1/4 oz loads of small shot. I shoot 2 oz of 7's myself. You are throwing some 4's and 5's. maybe experiment with choke diameter with your load

I tried and tried to get a better pattern than I was getting out of my 870. I started with the first turkey choke I found which was a cheap $20 truglo from dicks that came with fiber optic sights. I bought a jelly head next and found the truglo to be far better. Next was a wingmaster turkey choke, again nowhere near the truglo. Finally I got one better, but only marginally. It was a $90 rhino. All the aforementioned chokes performed similarity in a new 870 supermag. So, $$$$ doesn't always equal better patterns. Being a bonafide junky, I will probably buy a bunch more

If you find a choke that works, that is gives a killing pattern out to 40 yards, use it. On the other hand if you enjoy testing chokes and shooting, then enjoy that avenue. It just takes $$. This forum has lots of info on different kinds of chokes. Some of us like to shoot just as much as hunting turkeys. Just my thoughts.

what was the constriction of the choke tubes you have used? you may start to see that your gun prefers a super tight choke or a little more open one. smaller shot allows for a tighter choke. I hope I,am telling you right

again if your pattern is even you should be good to go, if you want more pellet count have you considered Hevi 13 mag blend they are 5's, 6's and 7's. I shoot 7's and a turkey has no where to hide, but I like the mag blends too

The only ones I have tried was the turkey chose the 835 came with and the Jellyhead, which is a .690 (??)   The Jellyhead was night and day better.  But those are the only two ive tried.  I was always afraid to try more because like most have said, they cost money.  BUT, turkey hunting is my life and I could find  a lot worse things to spend money on.

Lots of good chokes out there to experiment with. Your 835 will do well with most of them. Tons of guys love the jelly head in that gun.

They will be some guys on here with the same setup that. Will give you pointers such as constriction, chokes to try. You can save a lot of money buying your chokes used from the classifieds on here and ebay. Good luck this season, Iam sure you will do well

I have an SSX .670, and love mine!
Lot's of great chokes for that gun, but like others have said, if you are getting excellent results with what you have, I would stay with that.
I shoot the Hevi-13 3-2-7's, and enjoy great patterns, without brutal recoil. Best of both worlds.

I'd stick with what you've got. You can always throw down the big $$ but that doesn't mean your going to improve by leaps and bounds. If you can afford to just grab different constrictions on different chokes that may help you but its sounding like you don't need to fix a thing.
