Mossberg 835 vs Remington 870

I am a Remington man at heart.  I grew up shooting a 870.  My dad had a 870.  I bought 2 more later on actually had 4 at one time.  Great guns and I love them as much as any gun I have owned.  I had a Rem 1100 that I bought when I was 21.  I recently sold it.  I bought my boy a brand new 700BDL 25-06 for a deer rifle.  I have owned a Rem Sendaro  stainless fluted 25-06 that shot really well.  I even had a Rem 700BDL 7mm Rem Mag at one time.  I have owned 3 Rem 572BDL 22's.  So you can see I grew up shooting Remingtons.  But the main advantage I liked about owning Remington shotguns is that they would shoot pretty much dead center with factory bead.  And I got to admit that had I not bought the 835, I would still say the 870 would be my favorite turkey gun.  But the pattern advantage is the only reason why I picked the 835 as the ultimate turkey gun.  But with the right choke and loads, the 870 can kill one as far as I care to shoot.

I have never shot an 870, but they are a fine looking shotgunand have a fantastic reputation. However, my 835 with an SSX .670 shooting 3-2-7 Hevi-13 does everything I need. The 3" shell isn't as hard on the shouder, and still throws a wicked pattern.

I've had 3 835's and 2 870's. I don't own an 835 now and still have both the 870's. The 835's were good guns and I killed a lot of birds with a mossy, but I just like the 870 better. In "my opinion" the 835 patterns a little better but i like the way an 870 is built better. I can strip an 870 all the way down and throw er back together in no time. The mossbergs are a little more tricky to get back together. Personally one is just as good as the other and you can't go wrong with either one. Whichever one feels better to "you" is the better gun for ya.

Mossberg 835 without a doubt in my opinion

Remington 870 for me.  They are like the AR-15 of shotguns; tons of aftermarket support for them.  They are tough, reliable shotguns that are made in the USA.

I have both and I really like both.

I have had the 835 since 1998 and killed every bird until this year with it.  I love the over-bored barrel and the tang safety.  I don't like the fact the pump has a wiggle to it.  It is also pretty heavy.  I put a 24 inch barrel on it and a Mossberg extended XX full choke in it and I shoot in the 140s to 150s in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards with 3 1/2 inch Winchester XX 6's.

I won an 870 Express two years ago in a calling contest and just started hunting with it this year.  It is only a 3 inch gun, but I put and Indian Creek in it and shoot Hevi number 6s and it puts 200 in the 10 inch circle.  I like that it is a "tight" gun and is balanced.  Not a huge fan of the Remington safety, probably just used to the Mossberg.  I also do not like the finish on it.  Not sure what Remington calls it, but it rusts easy.  I chalk it up to being the bottom of the line model.  I have friends with older super mags and special purpose models that are absolutely wonderful guns.

Bottom line, for turkey guns these two are hard to beat.  They shoot as good as any expensive gun for a fraction of the price. you can take the extra cash from not buying a $1000 gun and go on an out of state turkey trip!

Have both....been using the 870 supermag with Federal HW #7 in 3 1/2 inch shells for the last five years.......It's a turkey killing sob!!
