My 2007 F150 is knocking like crazy. Last summer it was in & out of the garage more than any other vehicle I have ever owned. I was told it needs new rings & pistons & that it would be cheaper to just get a different engine. I refuse to put any more money into it. Tomorrow I go look at an 2008 Chevy Silverado. It's sad b/c I really liked my ford but with only 116,000 miles on it I am ready to move on. Who else owns a Silverado & how do you like it.....

I'm on my third Z71 Silverado.  I expect that there will be a fourth somewhere down the line.  I have about 50k on this one so far.

I suspect what you are hearing is the "cam balancer" or counterbalancer...not sure of the exact name of the part. This is a very common problem on the 5.4 motors. It gets very loud and it does sound like the motor is coming apart.

I have a 2006 F-150 I bought used and was told that this repair had been done...who knows if that was true.

I was told about an $ 1100 fix by a Ford dealer if this happens...again I have not verified that.

I would sure get this checked before you abandon the truck thinking it needs a complete overhaul.

I traded in a 2004 1500 Silverado with 186,000 on it and it was still running great...a little piston slap noise but that was it.  The instruments in the dash were starting to quit working but that is not  a real expensive fix.

I personally like the F-150 better..it handles loads better and rides MUCH better off road, but I won't be real happy if I have to fix the cam balancer problem if it comes up.

Gas mileage is better on the Chevy's.

I am still driving my 1999 Extended cab Silverado which has 252,000 mikes on it and does not use a drop of oil!  I change the oil religiously every 3k.  They get the best gas mileage of any truck out there in their size.  The only down fall they have is RUST!  My cab corners are rusting through at the bottom and the wheel wells are now rusting as well.  This is the first truck that I have kept more than 4 yrs.  I always told myself that if I kept one past the 4yr mark I would drive her until the wheels fall off.  I've had her 14 yrs this month and will not hesitate to take her across the country again this spring.

I just traded my silverado in last year. It had almost 210,000 miles on it and rough miles at that. They are some tough trucks.

Just bought my fourth one. I put over 190,000 miles on all three. The last one was a 2008 with 210,000 miles. Never had any major issue.

After many test drives & thought, I traded my F150 in on a 2008 Silverado crew cab with low miles. I owe very little and now have little worries. I feel better already. Thanks for all the advice..

Cant complain, had a 1992 3/4 ton back when. It had 238000 miles on it with the same clutch. I pulled goosneck trailers of horses and cows with it. It was the 350. It was REAL hard to traid with that many miles on it.

As someone who has a owned a couple silverados I'm saying enough is enough.

I'm probably going to get a Honda ridgeline next. I know it's a yuppie truck but I know I can rely on the engine reliability.

Trust me a Chevy really isn't any better than a Ford.  I had a brand new 89 Chevy S10 pickup.  It started smoking on cold starts and using oil at 85,000 miles.  The interior was put together cheaper than a Yugo.  The glovebox lid broke, doorhandles broke several times.  The outide under the extra-cab rusted like crazy.  It was a piece of crap.  I later bought a 99 Ford Ranger.  Much better built on the inside and out.  But the transmission went out at 120,000 miles.  So that's not very good either.  I now have got smart.  I drive a 99 Honda Accord.  Best vehicle I have owned.  The driver door lock motor went out and I had to fix that.  Cost about $275 to get it fixed.  And the power window motor has gone out on the passenger side.  I'll fix that one day.  The air conditioner has leaked freon around the o-ring seal.  But for having this vehicle for 3 yrs almost and being this old, some of that stuff just wears out over time.  I bought the car with 86,000 miles on it and it now has 112,000 miles on it.  It will probably go to around 300,000 miles.  But I never will probably see that kind of miles no more than I drive.  No more automatic transmission for me.  It's a 4cyl 5 speed V-Tec motor.  It has plenty of pep.

I've had dodge, ford and chevy multiple times.  I also purchase the vehicles for my company and have used all three of the American brand trucks and vans... from my experience, I've had problems with every single one at some point in time.  I like the new Tundra, but for what they cost, I'd rather have another Super Duty Diesel.  I have a 2010 Silverado right now and just got done spending $900 for rear brakes at 70k miles (which doesn't bother me except the fronts are barely wearing at all), throttle body cleaned out and leaking transmission lines.  Honestly, the best luck I've had is with the 5.4L Fords... but that's my experience
