Threading an 11-87 barrel?

I've been looking into shortening my 11-87 barrel (1989) down to 21". I was told today that I would have to use Colonial arms chokes because of the barrel thickness. I was hoping to stick with the existing Rem Choke system but was unaware that the remington barrels flared at the end. Are there any other thin wall choke companies out there that use the same thread pattern as Colonial arms? Any positive experiences with Colonial arms? I have searched the topic but am hoping to get some more info. Thanks

Check with Sumtoy on this. If thick enough you can use invector system and thinner is Tru- choke system. Colonial is specific to its system but many good choke makers fit to tru-choke.

I'm just not a fan of thin-wall chokes, especially for turkey guns. I'm really not a fan of cutting barrels and threading them. I've had it done and some have worked well and some have not. If not done properly, it can be a real problem.

You should be able to find shorter factory barrels pretty easily. I have 24", 26", 28" and 30" barrels for my 11-87s and they are readily available.

You can check the OD of the barrel.  If it is .850 you can run rem/win chokes.  If it is .825 to .850 you run a tru-choke.  That is NOT the thin wall they make a thin wall that I will not even build a choke to sale.  Now the tru-choke comes in a few new guns.   I have them in turkey guns and guns that shoot 00 Buck shot.  Few TSS guns that have them.

The Tru- Choke is .793 O.D.   the SBE is .780 O.D. so this is not thin wall.

The only thing with them is you can't run to walmart and get a choke.  You got to get a good quality choke.

Now as for chokes SumToy, IC, Colonial, and Kick's have them that I know.  Briley I think makes them PG I dont know.  All American made out of strong American steel.  They will not give you any problems.   

Now cut the barrel off is better then factory a lot of times.  I will not say why because it will get reworded and used other places.  Now you have a lot of places that do it and do fine work.  Got a few on your end of the world that can do it.  

It is a lot less to cut it off.  35 to 50 to have that did most places.

Dr. SumToy is operating now on my SBE1 and doing the exact procedure you are speaking of....TruChoke it is and we are awaiting delivery eagerly!  20" of fury!! LOL  I can't wait to see her in her new digs!

I have had 6 barrels cut down in the last 15 years for different turkey guns builds.....I always choose a good smith and have never been disappointed....I say go for it!

I had Sumtoy cut down & re-thread my 30" 11-87 barrel and he did a fine job.  Have one of his chokes too and it does very well with my handloads.

Thanks for the info. I just took the choke out and measured the OD and got a rough measure ment of 14/16" (.875) and for the ID i got 13/16 (.8125). I don't have any way to get a good measurement of where i would like to cut it off and i have no idea how much it is flared.

How do you guys package your barrels for shipment? Any idea how much a barrel cost to be shipped several states away?

USPS you can pick up a box.  Triangle or round.   Now I would say no more
15 to ship.     and keep it  . Had a lot of folks give a life or part of it so cant turn our back now .

William worked on my SBE and Baikal and they both shot 300+/- with hevi #7 3.5" @ 40 yrds. I am a firm beliver in supporting American Companies. The products are typically better quality and consistance from choke to choke.  Sumtoy will work with you and getting the prefomance you desire.  I have had others do work for me and you can never get them on phone or have the job completed when promised.

I have had several cut and threaded. I have also found shorter barrels and sold my old barrels. This is a real cheap and sometimes free swap.  check out "remington country store"

If your barrel has a vent rib, you'll want to have it cut directly in front of one of the ribs.  This way, the barrel will look clean and give you a place to drill/tap for a new front bead.

My barrel ended up being around 25-25.5 inches as 26 would have been in the middle of a vent.

You may want to rethink the 21 in. length.  It's just my opinion, but a 24-26 in length would be a little better.  Patterns tend to be better with longer barrels also.  I've got a factory barrel in the 20-22 in. range and hunted with it one year.  It did fine, but I was all prepared to hunt with the 30in barrel again, until I decided/got an offer from Sumtoy to cut mine down.
