Cloudy day in the Carolina's today. The median walker was seen again Friday. That road is not open to traffic yet.

My hunting partner neighbor was out at the farms we hunt today to "get a little wild under his feet" as he would say.  Saw one really, really huge LB at our honey hole.  Maybe it was the giant slob that eluded me on three separate mornings last year. I can only hope, but too damn bad my buddy hunts the week before me.  He also saw two other groups of about 25 birds each with some LB's mixed in at two of the other farms we hunt.  That is a good sign that the 86 inches of snow we have had this year didn't starve, bury and freeze them all to death.

Cool. When is your opening day?

Cool. When is your opening day?

May 4th - 8th and I also scored a left over permit for the following May 11th - 15th season.  Potential for 10 days of pure 1/2 hour before sunrise to sunset hell/fun.  Hopefully I score early in both seasons this year.

Just drove home from Ocracoke Island on the Outer Banks of NC.  Saw plenty of turkeys in the fields (very windy and rainy today) and saw one nice Tom fanning/strutting about 50 yards off of US64 in a winter wheat field in Tyrrell County, hen right close by.  Even my wife thought that was exciting.
"I admire a good turkey hunter chiefly because such a man displays qualities that we usually associate with pioneer America-patience, enthusiasm, woodcraft, game sense, and a quiet hardihood undaunted by rain, by cold, by long tough miles, by disappointment."

Got out to one property I hunt this morning.  I wanted to get out there before light to listen but that didn't happen so I just took an easy walk around.  Found a bunch of manure and feathers and heard some gobbles pretty close so I am pretty excited.  Still have to wait 3 weeks for the regular season to start though.

After another 3 inch snow on Saturday, I hit the farms I hunt yesterday for a quick late afternoon scouting mission after the melt off.  Glassed one group with what appeared to be three 2nd year toms. They do look a little skinny this year though.  Saw another group of four 2nd year toms at another location doing a little strutting for the ladies. Birds were feeding heavy on residual corn along the edges of stubble fields so maybe they will fatten up a little before I get to them.  Also saw some single hens in a couple other spots so some breeding/ nesting action maybe underway inspite of the recent cold and snow.

While watching the second bunch, I heard some awful sounding calling coming from one of the adjacent properties ("Sacred Land" never to be trodden now that there is a new owner).  Wouldn't ya know after about four rounds of calls I heard a half hearted gobble and about 2 minutes later Boom.  Can only hope it wasn't the big boy my partner saw over that way a few weeks ago!  Hmm, late in the day on the last day of 1st season hopefully it was a desperation jake for the new not so neighborly neighbor.
