Finished reading "lllumination of the flatwoods" and Have a question

I read in a book one time that you could get naked and crawl backwards up to any gobbler in the woods .   But that dont work,  ants to bad around here.

That was in "The Old Pro Turkey Hunter" by Nunnery .. Probably my favorite book of all time on Turkey Hunting.. I have yet to read this one though..

I am pretty sure I have read in Tom Kelly's writings that "Turkey's dont have a curious bone in their body"  It might have been somewhere else though.. so it depends on what you believe I guess.. I have heard that Hutto knows what he is talking about though..

I am still reading it, but when I got to the part about how curious they are I thought of the same thread!

Did you miss my reply?  I remember that thread, it was kind of a funny story.  Seems to me there was a guy that went out with a farm hand or something like that, whom always killed turkeys.  They went out one morning and the guy threw a stuffed animal or something in the field and just waited until the turkeys walked up to check it out.

No worries.  I just finished the book a few minutes ago.  There were several intersting things that were brought up in the book that I hadn't thought about.  We really are entering their world and need to take every precaution to not stick out!  It was also interesting to see how they dealt with predators and such.

I could have done without all of his ramblings that weren't dealing with the turkeys, but that's just my own personal opinion.  All of the stuff dealing directly with the turkeys I thought was very interesting.

I agree about the ramblings, I kinda skipped over those parts.  I thought it was interesting about how the birds got mad at things hiding from them.
     I was wondering how big the area was that Joe took the birds, if thier travel range was as big as what native birds would travel.  I know the birds where I am at can travel quite a bit.  I wonder if native birds know thier territory as well as the birds in the book.  Just curious, this book has made me think of a lot of questions about turkeys.

I did the same thing, when I could tell he was rambling I looked for the point to where it was back to talking about turkeys.

I don't think his birds ranged as far as pure wild birds due to the fact that they came back to the same roost each day.   

I think it was a very intersting study that he did, but a lot of what happened reinforced the fact that wild animals do not make good pets.

One of the main questions I have is this.....How the heck did he make a living while living with these animals?  Was he working from some grant?  Can I get a grant to do a turkey HUNTING study?

Yeah, I dont think you could have a career and do the study like he did. I have no idea how he did it. He would spend basically dark to dark with the birds til they left.   He said that he did turkey hunt at one point, I wonder if he would after that experience.  Having such a close relationship with the birds would probably make it tough to kill them.
