Hevi-Metal Construction Concerns or Possibilities

I have just looked at the way the hevi-metal turkey pellets are made.
Initially I assumed that it was a blend of steel and H-?? shot. These are actually coated steel shot in order to satisfy the non-toxic requirements.

Could they coat lead shot and thus make them better than nickel or steel coated shot so that they would be denser, less deformation, better patterns and cheaper than the current iron/tungsten/whatever metal loads are costing?

I would not like to find coated steel in what I bought as a form of hevi-shot for turkeys myself.
However a tungsten/iron coated lead load may be a sensible solution as for cost and performance combined.

Well, we've had copper plated lead for many decades and its still considered toxic. Im not sure that any other plating or coating process would satisfy the environmenatlists who have grossly exagerrated the impact of lead in order to attack our freedoms to hunt and own firearms.

The toxic concerns were originally based on birds ingesting the pellets and thus dieing from lead poisoning.

I don't believe coating the pellets would stop lead from being toxic if they still ingest/digest the pellets.

I am not sure why certain areas are non-toxic only as there could be a myriad of reasons based on local issues/concerns.
I know that a local SGA is non-tox only for small game, meaning that single projectile loads are allowed (slugs for deer hunting).
My guess would be coating the pellets does not stop the lead from eventually getting out into the soil, marsh, ground water or wherever otherwise what was brought up to start the thread would have been done long ago.

The hevi metal loads are indeed a stacked-duplex load of steel shot (on the bottom) and hevi shot, 10 gm/cc shot (on the top) with flax seed as a wad filler on top of the whole deal.  They are EXACTLY the same loads as the hevi metal waterfowl loads but are 100 fps slower.  That is the only difference.

No but they have to be lead free and this way the steel shot behave mor elike lead and yet are not as expensive as straight hevi-shot.

According to one site and its description of these turkey shot they are steel pellets coated with tungsten/whatever. If I knew how to cite this and post here I would. Someone look it up and post please.
If you go to the Hevi-Shot site they are built exactly as mightyjoeyoung describes. I did not make this up about steel coated shot so if I can find that site I will pass it along. I was not suggesting that covering lead would make shot lead free or safer for the environment but rather that it could result in a little cheaper shot that way if possible.

It was the Midway USA ad and it stated that a layer of HS was over steel shot.
This was taken to mean that steel shot was coated .

Bad reporting on my part and it makes a heck of a lot more sense as I could not imagine them doing it the way I said. My apologies and thanks the one, the only, mightyjoeyoung for reporting back with the straight poop right from the mfgrs ad.

No worries.  I was wrong too.  It IS in fact H-13 shot according to my density tables.
