it really depends on how much you shoot. if you just check your pattern with four or 5 shots then shoot a few times during the season. it will last 2 or 3 years.
i have done a bunch of match barrels for our local shoot. i usually polish those barrels once a year.

ANY shotgun will benefit from having the barrel polished.

will this work on benelli barrels?
benelli crio barrels?

I have a Benelli Nova and want to do this.  Is there any reason we won't be able to on the Benelli?
I also have a Winchester 1300 I will do after.  Looks great and I'm definitely not opposed to easier cleaning.

you can litely polish a chrome lined barrel.you just need to becareful that you do not get real aggressive

I did it to my gun which had a chrome lined barrel.  As stated, just dont get real agressive. Low rpms and keep it moving.  It created a very nice finish in mine.

To polish a barrel using this method the following items will be needed.
this has been a proven safe process that has shown great results!!
you will see a mirror finish,better patterns(in most cases ) as well as easier cleanup of your barrel !!!!!!
Green Scotch Brite
J&B Bore cleaner www.Brownells.com
J&B Bore Bright
Kroil Kreeping oil  Brownells.com OR www.kanolabs.com

A Drill
Cleaning rod (i use a Hoppes 1/4"- 3pc without the handle)
20ga brush for 12ga ---.410 or 44cal. brush for 20ga.


NOTICE NOT recommended to polish chambers,ports,or chrome lined barrels.
it is NOT Recommended to polish barrel with turkey choke installed.
use a MODIFIED OR IMPROVED CHOKE during polishing process

i have polished over gas ports and barrel ports with No ill effects. but use caution. after polishing be sure to clean all materials out of ports.

using a empty 12ga. hull and a empty 20ga. hull i drill out the primer to the size of my cleaning rod. i insert the 20ga. hull into the 12ga. hull so that brass is showing on both ends.

for 3"chamber use 3"hull for 3.5"chamber use 3.5"hull


this will act as a guide for the rod and a stop for your brush as well as protecting the chamber from being polished.

1. wrap scotch brite around brush

2. apply Kroil and J&b Bore cleaner.


3. insert into chamber push forward until you can insert shell guide fully into chamber.

4. start drill as you move rod towards muzzle.

     caution--- do Not let patch spin in one place in barrel. rod must be in forward or backward motion while drill is spinning rod



i usually do 100 or more passes using J&B Bore Cleaner
then swab the barrel with Liquid bore cleaner (of your choice) then follow with a couple dry patches to clean out the barrel .

Next step would be to follow steps 1 through 4 using J&B Bore Polish and Kroil.
i usually do 100 or more passes using J&B Bore Polish as well.


add fresh Scotch Brite and J&B and Kroil as needed through out the process

after polishing is complete flush barrel with liquid bore cleaner (your choice) then clean and dry patch.

besure to clean all ports and choke threads when finished

the following pics of what comes out of a barrel during polishing. to the eye this barrel was as clean as possible. i had cleaned it with some of the best solvent on the market. then dry patched until the patch came out white.

If i do mine, my dad and uncles are all going to want it done but they will be too lazy and I dont have the time for everyones

what i think to solve alot of questions is if someone does it please shoot a target before and after and post it so everone can see results

I use my gun for ducks, deer, squirrells, dove... I think you get the point. I am wanting to polish my barrel for patterning with turkey loads, not neccessarily for everything else. What will happen if I don'tpolish the barrel until next spring? Will it cause any damage not repoishing it till then?

I just ordered the Kroil and the JB's products to polish the bore of my new 870 and old mossberg 835.  I also have an old 20 gauge with a fixed full choke I would like to polish, but since I cannot change chokes, will polishing hurt the barrel?  Also, the 835 has a ported barrel, other than making sure I clean the ports well, is there anything I should do?

Is it possible to use Flitz in place of JB Bore Bright?

i have never tried using anything but J&B. there have been others that have used just about every kind of polish you can thing of. someone posted that they used turtle wax. J&B was made to use on firearms. so that is what i use. i do not believe on taking chances when dealing with a barrel

I wouldn't use Turtle Wax inside of a gun barrel for the same reason I wouldn't use it on a car..it's a paste, and it leaves a chalky residue that's hard to remove. I personally use 3M automotive hand glaze. It's a liquid and it doesn't build up...no chalk, no residue, no problems. It really removes powder residue and plastic wadding and leaves an oily coat that looks just like Hoppe's 9.

Oh by the way, I do want to mention that I wipe the glaze out of my barrels and chambers. I don't just leave it in there. Don't know if I made that clear in my last post.

Got my stuff ordered from Brownels, should be in later this week. I am going to try to go out and run a dove load thru each gun for before and after results, if I have time. I think it will be interesting to see what happens.

Anyone polished a fixed choke barrel?  I have fixed full 20 gauge, but I don't want to screw it up some how.
