Best call for beginner

Tried searching but am not having much luck so here goes nothing.... I am new to turkey hunting and have a limited budget to get started this year. So I won't be able to get a call from the custom makers as they are out of range this year. So if I only could select a call from one of the big stores (i.i Bass Pro or Cabelas) what would be the best one to get? Hopefully something that with 3 months practice I could get good enough to hopefully have a chance to call in a turkey.

Are mouth calls better than a pot? Which gives better bang for the buck? Way to confusing for the noob that I am.

A slate pot call would be your best call to learn on.

 IMO a box call is a good one for the beginner to learn on.

A friction call slate ,glass, ect.Also a boxcall.But go ahead and try a mouthcall,some people learn  fast on a mouthcall some never do.But get on youtube listen to turkeys yelping ,cutting ect.learn from turkeys not turkey callers.Timing of the notes is all important.WELCOME and good luck.

Box, then slate, then mouth. In that order. I would get one of the first 2 and a mouth call. The mouth call is cheap but will take alot longer to learn how to use. Good luck,

A friend of mine once told me its not the call, the turkey makes the decisions. I would get a call thats easy to use and maybe a hen decoy. You can pick up both for under $40. An easy call to use would be a box call, mixed with a hen decoy. If the bird plays right, you will only need to call a few times just so he knows where you are, then once he sees the decoy, he'll decide if he wants to come or not. We play their game on their turf.

3 months is enough time to gain proficiency on either mouth, box, or pot calls.

Drenalinld that is a pretty generous offer. That is what the turkey hunting comunity is all about. It doesn't matter where or who you are someone is always there to step up and lend a hand. 

When I first started hunting I bought a primos slate an off the shelf box call and an H.S mouth call. I could never make the box call sound good so I gave it to by brother in law when he started hunting and he killed a bird with it the first time he took it to the wood.

I would recommend you see what Drenalinld sends you if you take him up on his offer and try them all and use what you are comfortable with to start. Then in the off season play with the calls you are not so comfortable with till you can run them all with confidence

Woodwzrd, I am finding out that this generous spirit pervades a lot of hunting communities. I am on another forum where they are pretty generous as well. It must have something to do with the type of people that enjoy hunting for what it is and the type of people it attracts.
I want to thank all the people on Old Gobbler that have helped me out so far I have gotten a ton of good information so I am feeling pretty good about this season.

I believe the best call for a beginner is a ceramic call and on a limited budget I would suggest the HS ceramic Ring Zone call or the Primos Freak. Both can be found at wal Mart  or dicks.

That said there will be something in the package that Drenalid sends you that will get the job done. Calling is one of the least important parts of most turkey kills.

But as my signature suggests I highly recommend making room in your vest for a custom call from someone on OG for next season.

This is what I love about Old Gobbler...........people can come over here asking questions about calls or call makers and find out just what is out there and who is welling to help.
