Remington 1100

I have an old Remington 1100 made around 74 I think. The barrel has a sucky old Polly-choke. I know the polly choke is trash. However I like having a simi-auto. I was about to order a rem-choke barrel and add an after market choke like PG or JH. My delimia is the barrel runs about $230.00.

Option 1. buy rem-choke barrel and have 36 year old turkey gun for $230.00.

Option 2. Sell the 1100 for $400.00 or so, add the $230.00 I saved from not buying barrel and get NEW auto like 11-87.

I don't know where you are pricing the barrels but I just attended a gun show and alot of dealers had rem choke barrels for 125.00; if they weren't new they could have passed for new ones; I believe you can shop around and find alot cheaper than 230.00;

The old 1100's are a work of art and very well made; I personally would shop around for a good used/like new barrel; best of luck no matter what you decide.

You can thread the barrel and put a choke in it.  We doing 2 1100's now.  

That would be 35 to thread it.

A well maintained Remington 1100 will just keep going. They are well made guns. The only disadvantage of that gun for turkey hunting is that it will chamber a 2.75" shell and that gives you fewer choices of loads.

Poly Chokes look kind of funny to our eyes today but they actually work pretty well and will allow you to use that 1100 for upland game and at the clays range with just a twist of the choke tube.

You should be able to find a replacement barrel for a reasonable price but it will take a little looking, on line, gun shows, call a few dealers, etc. and I'd suggest you do that in mid-summer and not around any hunting seasons. Prices tend to be less then.

If however you want a 3" chamber for turkeys, you may want to shop for another gun. If you like the self-loaders and want one similar to your 1100, the 11-87 would be a good choice.

You are absolutely correct that it could be a 3" gun. Those are pretty coveted these days and if he has one, it would be very wise to hang on to it and find a newer Rem-Choke barrel for it.

You can find old barrels all day. I have a bunch of them.  You spend 35 to thread it and then a choke. Chokes is same money anyway you look.  Now it would be try choke and not as many chokes but you can get them.   Sumtoy , Kicks, CNC, PG did have and I think IC makes them.    So you can spend 35 to 45 plus choke or 250 plus choke or new gun plus choke

But to find an 1100 barrel with screw in rem-choke has been a chore. Went to gun show searched the whole place. Watch gunbroker, armslist etc... Cant find rem-choke to fit for under about 220 or so.
I will check with gunsmiths about threading it.

You might want to check with Mann & Son Sporting Goods (Since 1946) at 618.357.2911. They have a lot of barrels and prices are good as well. I suspect that 3" Rem-Choke barrels are pretty tough to find however.

Threading an older 1100 barrel for Rem-Chokes may also be a problem and most I've seen that have been cut and threaded, have used Tru-Choke threads.

I  have an old 1100 3 inch.It had a 30inch full on it.Took it to the gunsmith to get threaded for rem choke.The gunsmith said the barrel was  too thin for remchoke threads.He could do tru choke  hastings  so i went with that.Make shure you have a vent  rib  for sights though.The stock barrel from remington with fixed full still killed tukeys a 45 yards or so.When i look back on it I should of saved my money.

it is a sin to use this thing on turkeys with the "flightcontrol" Federal #5's
