remington 887

anybody use one of these guns yet, looking for a new chicken gun , cant decide on this or the mossberg 535 ats, i like the berg because of the thumbhole stock

When they first came out (887) lots of problems. Rough slides, shells sticking, finish not that good and the worst as far as I was concerned was poa and poi was way off, a foot or more at 30 yards. They may be better now. I like Remingtons but I would not buy a 887. JMHP

Correct me if i am wrong, but wasn't the 887 a spin off from the 870? If so why try to improve something that has worked flawlessly for years.

Save yourself some time, and pick up either a Mossberg 835 or a Rem 870, put a PG .670 or a SumToy custom choke in it, and you will be good to go!

There is not enough price difference in the 835 and 535 to not go ahead a get the 835.  You get the overbored barrel in the 835 and more after market selections to make it the turkey killer it is.  I got my new one at Walmart this past May for around $350.

A Remington 870 is also an excellent choice.  I would have no problem setting one up to turkey hunt with.  Depending on whether you shoot the 3.5s or not you could get the standard Magnum or the Super Magnum.  I personally shot 3" shells but do like the option of shooting the 3.5s if I ever choose to.  Good Luck in your Choice and both a proven killers.

X2!!  For the money I would look at the 835 or if you absolutely had too...the 870.     The 535 imo is nothing more than a 500 with a lengthened receiver.  It WILL and DOES kick harder than an 835 because its lighter and has a smaller bore and a much more distinct forcing cone.  While I'm not a remington fan, at least not the ones built in the last decade, if you can find one an 870 express mag is very hard to beat in the turkey woods...but an 835 will with authority.

This is very true. My 535 kicked alot harder than my 835. Nasty gun that is hard to get the right load/choke combo for. If you are gonna get a mossy, buy the 835!

the 835 will give you more for your money i had a 535 im not to big a man to admit it hurt to squeeze the trigger  and did'nt give very good patterns

History may prove that the 887 was a bad move for Remington -  It looks to be created to give the supernova a run for the money -

I am under the opinion that Remington should have used the 870 platform and developed some special models -

i have a remington 870 super mag, i have the 23'' vent barrel been a gobbler stopper for 5 years me and my 2 son have each killed on every year with this gun, had it back bored and the forcing cones polised right out of the box, just looking for a new one something offered in a thumbhole stock since remington only offers the sure shot stocks,,, i had an 835 and swore from the junky patterns you would never give me one again but this was one of the first of the early models,,,,,,,,,it still up in the air,,,,,
