I have a question...........

The older I get the harder it is for me to hear things, I ran heavy equipment for 20 years and worked inside a power plant for 30 years where the noise level was often way beyond the normal level. Over the years we grew accustomed to wearing hearing protection, but before that, we just walked around like zombies, without any.
Now I hear a constant ringing, and it is hard to locate according to sound in the woods, especially with wind blowing, I was wondering if anyone has tried those, "super hearing aids" that are supposed to increase your hearing in the woods, so you can hear that turkey coming through or that deer grunting off in the distance? And if anyone has any information on them?

I have never used the Walkers Game Ears or similar products.  If you do look into these, make sure you get ones that have a limiter.  Some of the less expensive products amplify sound, but don't limit or suppress sound over a certain level (gun shot).  These would be o.k. for bowhunting, but for gun hunting you need to be sure they have a limiter that suppresses sounds over a certain decibel range.

I do not have the ringing but do have problems hearing in crowds and locationg sounds in the woods, most times I think the sound came from one direction and it relly cam from anothe direction.
I have thought about the hearing aids for hunting but have not spent the money yet.

Does your wife tell you that you have selective hearing ? My wife does. She says I only hear what I want to hear.  :TooFunny: My ears ring all the time from working factory work all my life. Even though I wore ear plugs all the time @ work my hearing is terrible. I have a pair of the Walkers Game Ear Power Muffs. I got them mostly for turkey huntin. I can hear turkeys gobble from the next county but its hard for me to determine which direction the gobbles are coming from. If you have the Power Muffs on & shoot a gun they will automatically shut off the muzzle blast. However I do remember talkin to you on the phone one time & your wife told you to " walk on over here cause you're gonna limp back". I know you heard that !

Pappy, I've got the constant ringing and hearing loss also.  I use the Walker's Power Muffs in the woods.  They work well as far as amplifying sounds, but they amplify EVERYTHING.  And there is zero directional perception, at least for me.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands, love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper; his hands remember the rifle.

If you have hearing loss, you have it all the time. Not just while hunting. If it is profound, as mine is,it has a much greater impact on daily life than you realize. It happens so slowly over the years you adjust to it without even knowing. It is usually profound before you notice it. Remember, the brain hears, not the ear. It just sends the signals. It is much more complicated than it seems, and the longer you go without hearing enhancement the less good they will do. I wouldn't fall for any hunting gimmics and get something to wear everyday. Unless of course your hearing really isn't that bad and you just want to get an extra edge while hunting. :anim_25:

I have a walkers game ear.  The hearing enhancement is great.  I only have 0ne so direction is screwy.  If I had 2 I could get direction and would have no issues.

Guys I personally dont have to deal with loss of hearing. Probably will onw day as I know my hearing isnt what it was from working in power plants , factories etc... However my wife is 50% hearing impaired and onew thing she always tells me or others is if you couldnt see you wouldnt just go to the drugstore and get Reading glasses you would go to the eye doctor and get glasses. If you can afford it, because I know times are tight and most insurance doesnt cover hearin aids. Go to an audiologist and get an exam at the least to determine exactly what you can and cannot hear. Most hearing aid places will work with you on hearing aids and their are alot of programs out there to reduce the cost if you are working also. I spend $4- 5000 dollars on hearing aids for my wife every 3-5 years. Your hearing is worth it for you and your family.

What if that sound you cant locate is a cars horn and it doesn prevent an accident because you didnt have your game ear in.

My wife has opened my eyes to this world and we are passionate about it. Not trying to be overbearing but it is or can be that important

Pappy, I still have excellent hearing for the most part. The one thing I struggle with is background noise as you mentioned. On windy days I struggle to distinguish sounds or have difficulty understanding voices on the radio in heavy traffic. Also, the human voice frequency is in the range where my hearing is not quite as good. It was nice of the Dr. to confirm why I can't hear my wife.

I have tried both the ear muff and hearing aid style enhancements from Walker's Game Ear and they only make this problem worse. In addition there is no sense of direction with the muffs. You do have a little side to side perception with the hearing aid style, but I could not differentiate between one o'clock and five o'clock.

They do make it possible to hear things you would otherwise miss, but as stated earlier they amplify everything and a nearby squirrel may be loud enough to push you over the edge....lol

I have a better suggestion. I can hear a turkey gobble in the next county and can hear drumming better than most. Just take me with you. :you_rock: :you_rock:

Back when I was younger I used to have a lot of fluid on my ear drums causing me to not hear well. ( tubes in the ears solved that problem.) I used Walker Game Ears Power Muffs and loved them. Was able to hear the deer walking at a distant, and when I shot it would muffle the sound.

I have one of the Walkers Game Ears and like it well enough, it pics up everything and disstorts some sounds, like sometimes with it in a crow will sound alot like a hen for some reason and if the winds blowing a little or the crows are going nuts it will drive a person crazy.
