Hearing Protection

I'm looking for some recommendations for hearing protection ideas. I'm starting to think the best way to turkey hunt is to go without, but as a musician and music lover the thought of losing my hearing (or even not hearing as well as I do) is a tough pill to swallow.

Last year I tried Walker's and had a tough time. They lack a nuanced sense of direction that left me wondering where the bird was gobbling from. I also had a tough time calling in them because it just sounded different coming through the headphones. If I try to put them, or any other kind of protection, on when I get eyes on a bird that runs the risk of me getting busted.

I'm wondering if y'all have recommendations for a better set of electronic hearing protection that sounds more natural. Any other techniques to protect hearing are also welcome!

Protection from gunshots can be done with some earplugs that allow hearing and block the shot out.  Lots of brands out there. I wouldn't put them in until the bird was moving in, but if you want enhancement AND some protection from a gunshot, Tetra.  Costly but great.
Love to hunt the King of Spring!

I tried Tetra and found they did not help me! Depending on your hearing loss I guess! I was told a lot before purchasing that never panned out. I returned mine in the recommended time frame! The 100% money back guarantee is a farce!

I have significant hearing loss due to a unique disease and compounded by lots of unprotected shooting. I use Tetras and love them. I've tried almost all other options before them and none were great for hunting. Get a real hearing test if you order them, don't rely on their online test. As stated above, talk to your audiologist/doctor because there are hearing issues that they cannot overcome. For me, the constant ringing in my ears block sounds that I may be able to hear and the Tetras make my ringing stop while wearing them and for several hours after I take them out. I can hear drumming and subtle hen talk that I cannot hear without them. I had great customer service from Tetra, but may not always be the case. My only regret is I did not get the custom fit models. These block a lot of shot noise, 70-80%, but the customs block all of it. I do not run mine on magnum level and they do not affect my calling using the lower levels. They also filter out wind and road noise that walkers and others make louder. I can wear them under a full mask or cap without getting feedback or fabric noise when turning my head that others pick up.

I know a guy that would stick his in about the time he expected the bird to come into view.  Some could consider it risky, but I don't recall him ever getting busted.  They were just the cheap ones that hang around your neck.

I have the Tetra Custom shields. I uase the for turkey and deer. they were not cheap but I dont go hunting with out them.
I can still hear good enough without them but because of my high frequency loose, I lose the little tweety birds, soft hen sounds, game walking on leaves and such . what I like most is when you pull the trigger it suppresses the bang. A few years ago i pulled the trigger on a gobbler while leaning aginst a big white pine. I was leaning way to my right and the bang echoed off that tree . about blew my ear out.  i couldn't here properly on that side for weeks. which ever one you go with make sure it suppresses.. hope this helps.
