Choosing a red-dot

I'm considering the purchase of a "reflex or red-dot" type of sight for my 11-87 12 gauge. I know absolutely "nothing, zero, nada" about these types of sights and there are tons of makes, models and sizes. My 11-87 has been drilled/tapped and an EGW picatinny rail is mounted. I put a Choate pistol-grip stock on this scattergun with the comb modified to raise my head up. (Thank You Danny from WV!) This Rem autoloader is used for turkey and rifled slugs for whitetail also. (maximum 100 yards shooting slugs but more like 50-60) Is there a thread or website that explains the different options of these sights? I see prices vary from $100 up to and over $600. Would someone point me in the right direction or recommend a quality sight for my application?

Thank You!

Just about any modern reflex style red dot will be "good enough" for turkey guns. If you want the absolute best, tried and true dot, look at Trijicon ($$$). Vortex and Holosun are your best "bang for your buck" imo. If you're looking for a budget option, Burris fastfires and Osights seem to be decent (I dont have personal experience with these dots, but know lots of people that do). I shot Leupolds for a long time and they are fine too, but their features havent kept pace with their price, imo.

I am a USPSA grandmaster and I shoot 10s of thousands of rounds of 9mm with slide ride red dots. Ive tried them all over the years and broken my share of red dots. Reciprocating slides are notoriously rough on red dots. If you go to a uspsa match youll see almost exclusively holosun and vortex dots on competitors guns. Youll see some trijicons too, but its getting hard to justify their price anymore. If you want tried and true ruggedness, those 3 are the only options, imo.

Dot size is personal preference. I prefer the smallest dot possible and dont feel there is a downside to a small dot. Some guys argue that small dots are harder to see. Big dots can be less precise. Not a huge deal for a turkey gun, but patterning is made easier with a tiny, precise dot. Small dots also help if you have astigmatism and get starbursting. Red vs. Green is totally personal preference too.

Vortex has the best customer service, hands down. This is worth a lot imo.

My best advice is to decide what your budget is and go to a shop to look at the dots in that price range. Like i said before, theyre all pretty decent quality these days, so there is no wrong answer.

I should also mention that closed emitter dots have gotten a lot better in the last couple of years. Those will be a better option if you're gonna be draggin your gun through the mud and water. Not required, but itll keep water and other crap off the emitter and you wont have to worry about multi-dot issues. Rare, but it does happen with open emitter dots. Just about all the brands mentioned above offer closed emmitter options.

If I was mounting a dot on a drilled and tapped receiver today, this would be my choice- https://a.co/d/715VDBD

Thanks for the reply BullTom. I guess that I need to go to a place that has a ton of these reflex sights and look thru a bunch to determine what size dot that I would prefer.
