It's not as bad as it seems, bbcoach. I buy enough materials each spring for about fifty calls and make about that many new ones prior to the season. I have an "inventory" of old calls from previous years...usually around 150+/- that I keep at the end of the spring season. These are calls that didn't quite make my final lineup for use in previous seasons.

Prior to the season, I will run through them all to see a) if the "aging" process has changed their sound, and b) to see if my perception of whether they should make this year's lineup has changed, as well. I will modify the ones that I feel are not quite up-to-snuff to see what I end up with...and if I get to the point where I think further modifications are a waste of time, I toss them.

Quite honestly, the whole process is mainly to entertain myself and pass the time waiting for the season to get here. ...And also to keep up the search for my "holy grail" mouth call.  :angel9:

Sounds like my pot call weeding.  Since our deer season ends the first of January, my pots come out then, with 8 to 10 pots and a dozen strikers and Practice begins.  By the end of March, 4 to 6 pots will make the grade along with a half dozen strikers for our opener around the 12th of April.

Quote from: bbcoach on June 18, 2025, 01:06:13 PMThanks guys!  Great Thread and Posts!  WAY to Much Variability in my Book!  This seems like a VOLCANO waiting to blow and not in a Good Way!  For you guys that Roll your own, how BIG of a TRASH Pile do you have??

Luckily the materials are small or I'd have a real mess.  :TooFunny:
