Someone must have tipped off the turkeys that today was opening day.  The 4 longbeards and hens they've been following around for the last 2 weeks were no shows all day. Hardly any gobbling either.
Finally around midday I spotted a solo gobbler strutting for a hen in a field. They were about 175 yards out. So I backed up and skirted the field edge back in the woods. I was able to close the gap to 90 yards before some deadfalls made further forward progress impossible.
So I snuck out to the edge of the field and glassed. There he was, coming my way!! I eased into a sitting position against a tree, and waited.
That was the close part. Now comes the no cigar part.
I was hunting a cattle ranch that butts up to the backside of my property. The couple that run it are super nice people, with kids and grandkids. Apparently the grandkids came over today and wanted to ride motorcycles. One of them drove by the field adjacent to where the gobbler was approaching from. I saw him driving by back in the woods, but, needless to say, after that I never saw the gobbler again.
Oh well, what can you do but try again and be thankful that you met wonderful people who let you hunt their ranch?
My plan is to leave earlier tomorrow, walk to the field, put out a DSD spread near a clump of woods in the middle, and wait him out.
What do you think about that plan? These are relatively unpressured turkeys, so I think he'll be back. :fud:  :turkey:

Sunday AM was hen city. Saw 6 different hens, including a strutting hen that bullied my hen decoy. (Will upload the video soon)
Heard 3 different gobblers that morning, and called one into 75 yards behind me. But, a creek separated the field I was hunting from the wooded hill the gobblers were on. It didn't stop the hens from flying across to the field, but the gobblers just wouldn't do it. I hunted from daybreak to mid afternoon with lots of deer and turkey action, but no gobblers showed themselves.
Today, I slept in and the wife and I knocked out a whole bunch of honey do's. We got the garden started, and some of her flowers planted. Happy wife, happy life. ;)
Back at it tomorrow.

Here's the video of the deer coming across the field. There were four of them total, but these 2 marched across the field straight to me. By the time they spotted me they were a scant 20 feet away. They head bobbed, stomped their feet and finally turned and walked away.

Here's a video of a sassy, strutting hen attacking my DSD leading hen.
