Any tips?  Making my own from Tom wings, all are serviceable but curious if there are any tricks?

EZ

How much experience do you have with yelpers in general?

Dtrkyman

Not a lot, only using wing bones I have made myself, been successful with them however am limited with my calling and sometimes seems I can run one well and other times struggle.

Probably not a tuning issue?  But would be interesting to know more about building a good sounding call.

I have been playing with brass tubing over the mouth pieces and even have a brass end on one that sounds good.

Trying smooth internals and leaving the natural internal differences in the bone, particularly the end/barrel I guess you call it?

The reason I asked was because once you are well versed at playing, it makes tuning a call so much easier, meaning, you know when you get it right.

You can use putty from the Hobbie store to seal the joints until you get each piece the length you want, then glue em up. For "hen" tone, I usually keep the total length of the call under 8".

Mine being gobbler bones almost all are longer, just tore one apart and made a mini, definitely higher pitch.

I've been using electrical tape to hold them together until I figure out what I want.

Just always afraid to trim them short cuz you can't put em back!

Tried some 2 bone but didn't like them at all.

Going to go measure them!

Are you keeping each section similar in length?

Thanks Tony!

I was referring to your gobbler bones..... if you want "hen tone". Great starting point would be to make each section about the same (3") and insert 1/2" at each joint = 8".

Dtrkyman

Wondered about the distance to insert, just checked and mine seem to average 8 3/8th so not as long as I thought.

Broke one down I didn't like and it's 6 3/4 and sounds pretty good!

Problem I have is I have made so many I need to stick with one and get it dialed in for season, good problem to have I guess!

Dtrkyman

Any difference in which end to trim length from?

EZ

Everyone does things a little different. You'll figure it out.

If you are getting advise from Tony (EZ), don't walk, run with the information that you get from him!!!!  IMO Tony has it pretty well figured out when it comes to wing bone calls and is very consistent when he builds his calls, they are his specialty....

Dtrkyman

Mine are pretty consistent, they all look nd sound OK :TooFunny:
