I'm talking about the underside of the paddle that hits the striker, looks like tape or some type of plastic

I'm not sure what you're seeing but it must be the angle of the picture. There is no tape or plastic on these calls. I ended up letting a buddy from work who had never turkey hunted before borrow that call and he called in and killed his first turkey by himself with it. I gave him that call because it wouldn't have been right to take it back and I bought myself another one and it sounds and is built just as good. They hit a winner on this one

It's not a picture; it's my call that I bought. The black material is where I put chalk on my chatterbox. I'm moving and have packed up some of my calls. I'll try to find it and take a picture.

I know what you're saying now, I apologize for the misunderstanding on my end. I'm not sure that mine has the black stuff on it but my son has an older HS strut box call I gave him that has that on the under side of the paddle. You've got me curious now, I'll have to pull mine out and take a look when I get home.

It could be waterproof paint - the old name I think was called magic... I think a guy invented it and he sold it to Penn Woods ...
