I own a few trumpets  ;) , But to me my (in no order) Val Espinoza, William Lester and my Gwaltney Sound the most realistic. Do you or have you owned one of these and have a call that sounds more realistic??? I'm open to pms if your not willing to post your replies and I am in no way asking for the BASHING OF ANYONE. Please keep all negative comments to yourself. I just want to know what else, or whom I should be looking for.

I'm more interested in guys that are currently building calls and not the unicorn calls of the greats who are no longer building. But if you believe their call is superior id still be interested in that opinion

It is the caller and not the calls. Only thing the calls will do is fit your draw or playing style better. Very similar to cuts in mouth calls. Got to figure out your draw and then find calls that best run from that draw. Some builders do make smoother transitions which great help the playability of the call. Consistency by a call maker is also important.

I hear what you are saying and I believe I can call in a bird with most if not all of my trumpets but there are three that the sound even though unique between them, stand out as more realistic to me.
Guess I'm looking for another builder that is consistently turning out realistic easy to run calls.

A quality paddle caller will most run itself.  It just needs someone to carry it around the woods. Yoder409

Those three must fit your draw best.

What he said!!!

I see what you're asking though. Just read through these threads and you will get a good idea who most people favor. All the good call makers make what "they" like with the playability and the turkey that favorable to "them". You may like it or you may not and that's not your fault or the fault of the call maker, that's just how it is. Everybody plays different, has a different draw, positions his caller different, etc, and is looking for different levels of roll-over.

One good thing is the three you mentioned have a pretty good track record that most folks would agree with!!!

Thanks guys.  I know what I need to do so I guess I'll just have to pick one and run it exclusively for awhile.

Good answers from Davis and Mr. Tony. I have a bunch of trumpets sitting here in my office, as well as wingbones. And there are only a couple out of that whole flock that I might be tempted to say are not as good as the rest. But, I think it is just me running them and not the call as they are all built by the reputable builders. I think once you learn to draw, you can play most any of them, but there will be one or two that just seem to be your favorite and we are likely talking by micro margins of that being so.

But to what Mr. Tony said, if we are dealing with a solid call maker, we make most of the difference on any certain call. I have stood at Unicoi and watched a fellow pick up the call that the call builder said was the best on the table, and yet the fellow not like the way it ran, - put it down, and then his buddy pick it up and say that the exact same call is the best he has ever put to his lips.

I will also add this - there are calls in my possession that I did not like early on in my attempt to play them, and now four years later they are some of my favorite calls as I have just gotten alot better at drawing air (air control). So, even if a call does not scream for you at the moment, if you can do it financially, hold on to it for the time being and you may find that you gravitate back to it later.
