Hey all, just picked up a nearly mint 870 Special Purpose 3" Bottomland with the 28" barrel to replace my BPS and, obviously, I need to shoot a turkey with it. I grabbed a .660 Jellyhead choke for it since that seems to be the popular choice, and I've got some #4 Grand Slams, Federal Third Degrees and a nearly-new box of #4 Longbeards - are any of those shells a good bet or should I be looking at another option? Hevi-shot isn't an option here in Canada, so I'm either going Lead or TSS - what do y'all think?

Vintage

Tss is what I would pick. Good luck with your new toy.

I've killed a bunch with lead 4's.

You just have to shoot it and see.

#6 Longbeards are fine shells. If you can find the 1-7/8 ounce magnum loads, they are killer...Good luck with it!

The #6 and #5 longbeards in the 1 7/8 oz are mean.

2 3/4" or 3" #8.5x9 duplex Tss
Or straight 8's

Hard to beat the TSS.  More shot with great penetration.

Comes down to how much you want to spend. Not afraid to spend a few bucks to shoot the best, then TSS #9s are the answer. Not looking for the added expense, I'd look at #6 lead. #4s are giving up to much pattern density for my liking.

I have the exact same gun except with a 26" barrel, I use a 660 Jelly head and a 665 Indian creel and get almost identical pattern with Winchester Longbeard #6 . my gun shoots dead on POA/POI with the bead . good luck with your new gun it will serve you well for many years.

P.S if the trigger pull is heavy its a real easy fix I ordered a trigger spring for mine and did it myself.

Get yourself a sumtoy choke........Longbeards or TSS - don't matter - DEAD!
