biting into TSS?

On two occasions, I thought i was going to have to make a trip to the dentist. One time I could see where a very small fragment chipped off my tooth. Both times tooth "healed" on its own. And then my girlfriend chipped a tooth! Didn't require much at the dentist, but they filled it in with something? I immediately bought the Garrett Pro-Pointer metal detector and now go over all the meat very thoroughly. Link to metal detector:

I shoot 8.5s, and its still tough for the detector to pick them up sometimes. I figure 9s and 9.5s will just be that much tougher to find. The metal detector HAS found pellets I never would have otherwise.


For those saying "you ain't going over the meat good enough". Well, you obviously ain't killing as many turkeys as some of us do each spring. Unless you can only see his head when you shoot, you are liable to get a flier somewhere in him. Just the nature of the game with that many pellets coming down the barrel.

I have also taken to labeling my breasts accordingly to whether it should be "pellet free" or potentially have pellets in it. I keep those "pellet free" breasts for smoking and cooking large cuts. The breasts that are suspect to have some pellets get cut up in smaller pieces for fajitas, shredded turkey, etc. When I'm feeding others, I will only cook the "best" breasts.

I am planning on buying a cheap hand held metal detector and give that a try. something like this

wow love the detector idea, 700+ 9 or 10 shot TSS pellets in my 12ga loads and 590+ in my 20 ga load so a flier is not out of the question

someone els could have peppered the bird before also

I like the metal detector idea, those 9's are hard to find for sure.

Tss sucks to bite into! Of the 300+ birds shot with tss i have ate its going to happen eventually. My few times I have bit down on it it will definitely let you know it. Luckily I didn't chip or break any teeth. I cut my meat into smaller cubes for cooking and try to inspect each one but tss leaves such a small pellet trail eventually one will find its way to the plate.

I did it last Spring.  Chipped tooth number 14. (upper first molar) Had to have my first crown.  Still bothers me to eat on that side. 

I still plan to shoot TSS this year though.

Nathan, I tried my Garrett pro pointer after a buddy said that would work, it didn't for me, found a pellet and ran my pro pointer over without a beep. unless it is user error, Nathan have you got a beep  from TSS?

Make sure the sensitivity is set to high. Hold the power button for a couple seconds once it is on, until you hear a three note beep. Then with each successive press of the power button, you will be changing the sensitivity and report noise (sound, vibrate). Sensitivity has 3 levels (1 beep = lowest , 3 beeps = highest). Sounds more confusing than it is. But it MUST be on the highest sensitivity  (3 beeps). Also, try to detect the pellet along the side of the wand rather than the very tip.

Did you get a vibrate from the pellet? Just thinking that maybe your wand alert is only set to vibrate rather than beeping too.
