Been busy guys with work and a few family problems so I have been a little late with some results. It has been one of the worst years for weather for the turkeys that I can remember. Rain, Rain and more rain. I did my best to get out after the birds when I could and was lucky enough to get into a couple. After a rough first week of rain and close call I took my daughter out on a before school hunt. She has kept her grades decent and we are flexible about things if she is doing well. She asked to go and we headed off to an area I had seen a couple toms a couple days before. We set up in a winter wheat field and waited. Wasn't long and the birds let us know they were close. We heard them fly down and a few calls encouraged them to come our way. Three hens and a jake decided to come our way and before long two toms were giving us a look. The toms were just as happy to stay back and check things over until the hens started giving the hen decoy the works. They started pecking at the decoy with their beaks and making alot of noise. The toms decided to move in and see what all the fuss was about and at around 20 yards I dropped the hammer. My first Ontario bird for the 2011 season. A chubby 22 lb 2 year old.

Headed to the woods some more but the weather seems to have made the birds less vocal and less interested in anything this year. Tough hunting, close calls but nothing to show for it. Heading to work one morning I noticed some birds on a farm I have permission to hunt on but had never seen birds there. I stopped in and the farmer told me they had just started seeing them the last couple days. With permission and two days before I could hunt I kept a close eye on them every morning and afternoon coming and going from work. I finally got my chance at them and set up hoping to catch the toms before they found the hens for the day. Things worked out well as the birds were interested in my calls and at fly down were not long heading my way. Three jakes, a tom and a hen made their way to the imposter's in the field. Wasn't long and they were close enough for a shot. I fired and the tom hit the ground but much to my surprise he half  jumped up again. Not sure what happened, had feathers and the like but the second shot finished it. My second Ontario bird.

Nice Birds Outgunner. I know what you mean about the weather. I can't remember a spring we got as much rain as we got here in Pa. Besides A jake or two I called in the birds just wasn't working . Not sure why , maybe the weather , hunting pressure, Or just to many hen's where I hunt. It's hard to beat meat. Cutter And I are going to try to fix that problem this fall.
