I use a Harrison hoot'n stick.  Usually once I start hearing the song birds I will give it a try and see if I can locate one on the roost.  As I get closer I'll use it again to make sure I don't get too close and let him see me. The birds where I hunt roost in different spots almost every day, so I have to find them before moving through the woods.
