I mostly hunt the western states and looking for a quiet, zippered shell type jacket w hood that can deal w rain, wind, etc... which is what I'm currently dealing w in neb.  Don't need it insulated- happy to layer as needed.
Any ideas?  Thanks!

Browning packable rain gear. Goretex, you will not get wet. Hood, lightweight, uninsulated, but warm......can't go wrong. Comes with pants...

I have SKRE hard scrabble jacket and really like it. It's pretty quiet but not silent like wool but Pretty good. It blocks the wind and breathes well. I have been in a steady rain for a few hours and stayed dry it wasn't a down poor but a pretty good rain. This isn't waterproof and doesn't claim to be, just very repellent. I bought a vest first and really liked it so I bought the jacket and 2 pairs of pants. I will get more before fall rolls around.

I was blessed to find a Sitka uninsulated rain jacket in Cabela's bargain cave 3 years ago (otherwise I never thought I'd own anything with their brand on it). They cover the GoreTex with a very thin soft layer that is quiet. It admittedly soaks up and adds a bit of weight, but you yourself end up dry.

Waterproof and quiet will be tough. The soft shell jackets will be water resistant but in a steady downpour you will get wet. I have a kyrtek altitude that is great. But I would never pay full price for it

Thank you so much guys-  just the ideas I was looking for.  And I totally get the rain proof vs resistant- I'm looking for something more for wind and thunderstorm protection/ top layer/ shell. It's my last morning in neb- I wore my old cabellas gore tex coat- kinda long.  Then again, because I wore it and was sweating balls, of course it was calm and no rain... completely opposite of the forecast!

I also have a sitka delta wading jacket. Uninsulated and waterproof! After lots of wear it does soak in some rain but stays dry on the inside. Every few uses I treat it with the waterproof spray to help the water bead off. One of the best purchases I've made. Has kept me dry in some very hard downpours. if you have any friends that may be a guide or an outfitter,  get with them and see if they have the discounts. They usually do a friends and family program a couple times a year and you can get gear thru them with their 50% discount. Last week they had a discount for friends and family. Not sure if its still going on or not though.
