Good morning and I hope everybody's season is going good. I've been thinking about this for a while and haven't found information on it. I'm wondering how long a hen is receptive to breeding. I've read that they can reserve sperm to use if needed but are they still receptive to additional breeding. Are they receptive during the entire laying cycle or just once?

Once they start laying they are done with all turkeys.

Fall hunt is correct. Now if they loose the nest they may attempt to breed again.

Most hens can become impregnated within the first week of the breeding phase. After the breeding of the hens it will usually take several days for her to lay her eggs. Most of the time you hear about the second gobbling peak with this talking place it's usually gobblers trying to find the last of the hens that need breeding. Most of the time all this will take place within about 4 week period. I think once she become impregnated it's pretty much over for that hen , to start the next cycle, building herself up with feeding etc and laying her eggs..just my opinion.

I hope they all get pregnant soon. My daughter is dying to get one and this shutting you once they hit the ground thing is wearing on her right now.

In a healthy population a hen breeds with  multiple gobblers. However once she starts in incubation she is pretty much alone. Now I  have seen hens with nests in the same area get together for a quick lunch break.

A hen lays anywhere from 12 to 18 eggs in her nest give or take a few . They lay one egg a day and can also skip a day depending on weather and other things . Most will take a couple weeks before they go to setting on their nest full time . Once the majority of hens are in the laying and nesting cycle the gobbling usually picks up with less and less receptive hens for breeding .
