Mentoring Question
May 04, 2019, 07:08:13 PM
I am taking a mentoree hunting tomorrow. He attended a seminar I presented at and was assigned to me. They are supposed to scout their own spots and Ihelp him. He doesn't have any spots to try, I think he put some effort into it so I am torn. Do I go to one of his spots and probably waste my time, or take him to one of my spots and hope he doesn't hose me. Thoughts??

This is just my opinion. Its great that you are considering sharing one of your spots but only do it if you will not get upset if he takes someone else there later. If that will get you mad then no. Personally I will take no one other than my wife to places that I work my butt off trying to find birds in. I use to be open and share info and take people who had no where to go or wanted to try out turkey hunting and in the end lost several spots to them. I learned quick that turkey hunters do not devuldge info for a reason. In short , I would not. Now I would go with him and help him find new spots.

Remember a turkey hunter always has a plan A and B .. so it's up to you if you want to use plan A.... good luck either way .....

For me personally, I evaluate the individual and go from there. If they seem to be self motivated and workers then I will help them out. However I will not just send random people onfo on places I currently hunt. I dont own any turkeys until I put my tag on them so I have never been to possessive on birds. I like to see serious hunters succeed. Lazy hunters not so much.

My home state a Gobbler is a precious commodity there ain't a whole bunch of them. I would sooner give you my ATM card and pin number than take you to my hunting spots.
Pointing someone to a general area of National forest for example is one thing bringing someone you barley know to a specific spot is asking for trouble. I guess it depends on how valuable you think a Gobbler is. If he doesn't have access to private land and can't find public land he won't last long as a turkey hunter anyway. If he's got to kill a turkey his first season or else he'll quit I say good. I'd go with him to whatever he found and answer his questions and show him which areas to look for and how to set up etc. but spoon feeding people is what's wrong with most of society in everyday life let alone turkey hunting.
If you make everything easy how do you know when your good at anything?

Take him to his spot. If it's not a good spot then he has learned the hard way like most of us.

Are you talking public or private, I am for the if I am mentoring I want them to see some success, doesn't mean a kill but the experience, I always explain the "it's the hunt not the harvest". In most cases with kids I am taking them on private, some adults too if I get a good read on them, and then there is public. Even with the kids around here a lot of the families are farms and have their own access.

If he wants to learn bad enough the first thing is finding a spot to hunt. How do you turkey hunt without a place to hunt? If you take him he probably just found a easy one..Lol...
Sounds like he didn't try very hard in my opinion. If he wanted to learn bad enough he would have came up with something. Hopefully you don't end up being the burned nice guy..
