Took my buddy and his 9yo daughter out to my farm for youth weekend. This is the 3rd year, and we've had 2 misses but never connected. Set up the blind and decoys in a clearing near the woods where we've been seeing birds recently. Had 4 gobblers sounding off at first light, but they went quiet after flydown. 45 mins later we hear a Tom fire off, followed by some hen chatter. 20 mins of talking over the hen and she came running in, dragging 7 other hens with her, and one big old Tom in the rear. We got the full song and dance, as he came in to 30 yards in full strut looking to kick some Jake decoy butt!
She made a great shot with the scoped 20ga, and he dropped where he stood and hardly twitched. 26 lbs, 11.5" beard and 1" spurs. Not bad for her first bird!
Great time and awesome start to the season!
