Well this AM the gobblers have been tight beaked, so I'll write you guys about yesterday afternoon.
It rained hard in the AM, and was overcast till about 1600. When the sun came out, the gobblers fired up! I had 3 gobblers going off, and 2 of them where close. The 3 birds gobbled at least 200 times between 1625 and 1815. I've never before heard that much afternoon gobbling!
One of them eventually broke from his strut zone, and came up hill to the recently logged clearcut I was hunting in. He came to the edge of the clearcut and gobbled twice. Then he drifted off, but came back 3 more times and gobbled from just inside the woodline.
He wouldn't commit to the open area, and from where he was gobbling he couldn't see my decoys.
Finally about 1830 they all drifted away towards the hardwood creek bottom where they roost. The next best thing to getting a bird is having a super exciting hunt, and I did have that!!
