Late afternoon big bird gobbling

Last year I had long beards coming in hot and gobbling just about an hour before roosting time.  Never ever had birds gobbling in the afternoon.  Reckon this is a new thing for our area of west Ky or are others having this happening to  them as well.

I have killed several down here in the south that gobbled there heads off in the afternoon. Sometimes they just fire up when the mood hits them.

It seems to be a regional type thing.  I hunt mostly Ohio.  One area I hunted for 10-12 years I can count on one hand the number of afternoon/evening gobbles I heard.  Have now hunted a new area for the past 7-8 years and they absolutely gobble their heads off most evenings.

I don't hear much gobbling in the afternoon on the places I frequent.  But it seems if I do hear one, something has tripped his trigger and he's going nuts with his gobbling.  Normally doesn't end well for him.

Doesn't happen much here at home but it seems the further North I travel it is more common. When they go to roost Gobbling there usually alone and have just gave up there position. That's about as much help as they can give you. I've had them answer every call while they headed to there roost they wouldn't come my way but they went to sleep thinking about the hen they just heard and the next morning can be a quick one.

I've killed quite a few late in the afternoon gobbling like that. It's not everyday it happens but several times throughout the year it does.

It seldom happens here in the Trans-Bluegrass, but when it does, the action is usually terrific the next morning.

What I find brings it on is a spate of warm days with the temps getting over 70F each day.  String a few of those together, and by the third, the gobs are gobbling on the roost  well past sundown. The next day usually sees the turkeys ready to mount anything they can.

I cut my teeth on Missouri long beards...never got to hunt past 1:00. Once I grew up and moved to a few different states it really opened my eyes. Hunted the roosting areas in the evening, and if you could get one to gobble...well, like GI Joe said...winning is half the battle... and if they gobbled, that was half the battle!
