Dawkins suggestions

I was going to order a shortbox from darrin dawkins and was wondering what your guys favorite combos are? I really wanted a checkered box but I guess hes not doing the checkering right now. I would also like your opinions on the
grooved or plain sides. Any help is much appreciated thank you and yes I've already text with dawkins just want some owners thoughts. Thanks

I have a walnut / walnut and a walnut over mineral poplar from him. Both sound really good. The all walnut is slightly higher pitch with a little less rasp.

I have 4 short boxes from Darrin and my favorite is a Walnut over Mahogany. But they are all outstanding. The Walnut over Mahogany may be my favorite short box out of all the box calls I own.

I was lucky enough to snag a walnut mahogany recently it's so smooth in its yelp, it's a two year wait right??? Go with his signature baby.

I just got a walnut over mahogany from Al andJosh Shoemaker and its the best sounding call .I really like that wood combination.i will definitely be packing it to the woods come spring.

Thanks guys even though I already have a walnut/ mahogany lamar williams and a frank Kruer one sider. Based on your suggestions I ordered a grooved side mahogany/ walnut.  Thanks

If it says "Darrin Dawkins" on the bottom, the wood combo is quite inconsequential.   It will be a killer !!

I have walnut over poplar and walnut over mahogany.   Both are incredible !!   I'll give a microscopic edge to the mahogany call.
