Iowa second season

Bonjour

Was a bust. I started off Friday morning on the wrong side of the river. Birds flew down to the other side and disappeared. The weather didn't help things out, we had 30 mph winds with gusts up to 50. The winds brought a lot of rain Friday afternoon, so I decided to take a break from the weather for the rest of the day. Saturday morning and the same story as before. The wind was howling just as bad and I got snowed on, and then rained on. Luckily, my cousin and I decided to split up this morning. He went to the same place we set up the day before, and I chose to hunt the field that they flewdown to the day before. As I am sitting up against the tree, getting snowed on, I hear BOOM, BOOM. I get a text a few minutes later from my cousin with a pic of a nice longbeard. I decided to hunt this side of the river most of the day, and didn't see or hear a bird. I did get to watch some on the other side of the river go to roost on the point so I thought this morning would be good. Sunday morning and the winds have subsided. I set up along a creek that dumps into the river just off the area where the birds were roosted. I figured that it was going to be a good morning because the turkeys were on fire the minute the sun started to climb up on the horizon. I was quite upset when I hear the birds pitch down off the roost to the other side of the river, and right to where I was set up the day before. I packed up and drove around to the other side of the river and played cat and mouse with the flock the rest of the morning. I had a few close calls, but that was about it. Hopefully we get some better weather for 4th season in 2 weeks. Hope the rest of the Iowans here had a better weekend than I did.

Ah that sucks Ryan.... I do pity those guys hunting 2nd season with the weather we have been having.  Today was probably the best day the guys could ask for so far.

Talk to ya later buddy.

I'm sorry to hear about that.  2nd season would've definitely not been very fun this year.  I went 1st season, but even though the weather was great the first three days, the birds didn't work very well.  I was lucky enough to tag one on Thursday when the weather turned bad, and the birds decided to play in the rain...go figure.  This may be the last year I hunt 1st season, though.  I might just start getting two 4th season tags, instead.  The little four and five days seasons are frustrating.

I was also lucky and hunted 1st season. I think if I didnt I would have waited and hunted 3rd with the way the weather is. I've hardly had any luck in cold wet weather, but then again I had a hard 1st season also. Had plenty of chances at Jakes, but seemed like the longbeards were henned up and couldn't seem to get the hens going. Looking forward to 4th.

Yeah, those who went second season really got the shaft weather-wise.
I've got a third season tag, and the forecast for Wednesday morning (snow and wind) doesn't look too promising.
Can you actually purchase two fourth season tags?

Bonjour

I was going to ask that too Greg. I didn't think you could get 2 tags for 4th season. That is sweet if you can. I think I'm going to have to look into that for next year if the weather is bad. I also have heard of quite a few people doing good this year in the nasty weather. I was just the classic case of wrong place at the wrong time this year. That's why they call it hunting though, and it was still fun to be out chasing them anyway.

Yes. The regulations say "two combination gun/bow of which at least one must be season 4."  So, according to that, you can buy two tags for 4th season, and fill both tags on the same day.

I'll probably try that next year.  Maybe hunt Kansas early, then Missouri, and THEN Iowa to better time the nesting periods.  1st season was awesome back when we had warm winters, but the last few seemed to have pushed good action back a couple of weeks.

Thats's awesome that you can buy both of your tags for season 4.  I simply did not realize that.
I think I'm going to do that next year...I hate having a sense of pressure to get it done in 4 or 5 days if the weather is terrible.

Yea 2nd season was a bust for us too, we did get close to some birds in the snow.  My buddy missed one 7 yds next to the blind- man he was ticked. first time in 40 years hes missed one.  Then it seemed we just couldn't get the deal sealed on a few other ones.  I wished I had had a full strut deke.  The birds were sticking to the timber and not gobbling, we busted a few that were silently strutting in woods.  Not normal for us.
but I guess thats why it hunting

I've always got season 3 and 4 in Iowa, which works well for me on my vacation. Sorry about your luck Ryan. I've left myself 3 days for Iowa on season 3, so hoping I get on them quick. Better luck in season 4 Ryan :anim_25:

Bonjour

Thanks, good luck to you too Jay.  :you_rock:
