Looking to buy a slate from Lonnie Mabry. I know I should go and pick one out in his shop but I live behind the iron curtain in NY. I will have someone pick one up for me, hopefully.... any suggestions what combo and striker ? thanks....

TJ I'm really glad you like that cedar slate. I'm more partial to his walnut slate with cherry soundboard. Lonnie doesn't always have the cedar but he always has the walnut.

I also like his cedar slate with cherry soundboard. Really good sounding slate.

I spent about 4 hours at Mr. Mabry's a few weeks ago. I played call after call after call. Then I went through every type of striker he had on hand I think. To my ear the best I found was a mahogany slate with a bocote striker. I thought canary & yellow heart were good too. He told me he was out of black locust because people keep getting them.

noisy box call that seems to sound like a flock of juvenile hens pecking their way through a wheat field
