Did you try posting on Craigslist and Facebook? Might have a better chance of finding the rightful owner that way. Good on you OP, way to take the high road.

I did.  I put it on craigslist, facebook, and 5 hunting/fishing forums that I'm on.  I even left a note on a piece of cardboard with a note and my phone number on it where the hunter left their gear.  I know it's littering, but I figured it was ok just this once, considering the situation.
