Question about choke constriction

Just got a Remington super full choke and going to put it in either my 11-87 compact or 870 compact. Both have same length barrels. I'm used to using 12ga 3.5 and didn't worry too much about choke because the areas I hunt most shots are under 30 yards. My question is Remington states that the constriction is .665. I am going to be better off using a smaller shot such as 6's or 7's out of it, right? I see alot of guys using a more open choke in the 550's. Am I using too tight of choke? Haven't shot it yet, just wanted a base. From what I gather using larger shot requires a more open choke. Am I wrong here or just confused?

Thanks. That's what was confusing me. Thinking the higher numbers was a tighter choke for some reason.

Yes, you are confusing exit diameter with choke constriction. For a bore that measures .730", a choke with an exit diameter of .665" has a constriction of .065" (.730-.665=.065). A choke with an exit diameter of .650" has a constriction of .080" (.730-.650=.080). So a .650 is tighter than a .665. These numbers are for a 12 ga, but the same principle holds true for all gauges.

So help me out here. When I ordered it, it stated .660 constriction. I get it today it says .045 constriction .572 inside. So is it .572? Am I still looking in the area of 6's or hvywt7's? or hevi 7's or am I better off larger shot. Man this stuff was so much easier with a 12 3.5 incher.

Either you or Rem are confused. No choke tube is going to have .660 constriction. A 12 ga tube could have a .660 exit diameter (.069 constriction). But your 20 ga will have a bore around .615. A tube with .045 constriction will end up with an exit diameter around .570, and should be fine for your HW 7s or HS 7s. I would not use larger shot than that in your 20 in an HTL product. If you choose to shoot lead, I would look at the LB 6s.

I'm definitely confused but ordered it from cheaper than dirt because only place I could find it. On their sight it stated .660. When I got it and opened it, it stated other size. This is definitely a learning curve and I thank you guys for the help. Going to try several different shells out this weekend and see what we get.

I assume from your earlier post this is for a R.E.M. 20 gauge?
If so your chokes will be in the .550 (very tight)-.585 (more open)mark

If not and it is a R.E.M. 12 gauge they will be in the
.650(very tight)- 695(more open)

I shoot both of them and can tell you what works for me but all guns are different.
