I recently tested 3 chokes under less than ideal conditions but the info gained was useful.
I was using a Remington 870 Express, 12 ga., 26" barrel, with Hevi Shot 3", 2 oz., #7. Sight was a Tru Glo Pro Series Magnum Gobble Dot.
Temp was 80 F, with a perpendicular cross wind of ~10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph. The wind was blowing from right to left. I tried to shoot when the wind was at a minimum but some shots were with about a 10 mph cross wind.
All shots were from 40 yds, sitting, with the gun on a tripod.
Chokes used were Hevi 13 (.662), Tru Glo SSX (.643), and Jellyhead (.660). I chose those 3 chokes based on a lot of reviews for the 870 on Old Gobbler.
I put one shot through each choke and determined the Hevi 13 gave the best results (260 in 10") followed by the SSX (222 in 10"), and then the Jellyhead (186 in 10").
I shot two more times using the Hevi 13 choke and got 251 and 228 in 10". The average of the 3 Hevi 13 shots was 245 but the number of pellets in the 10" circle decreased with each shot. The gun was not cleaned between shots.
I suspect the cross wind had some effect on the shots that landed left of the black mark but I really need to shoot with no wind and with a more stable rest than a tripod.
I plan to do more testing with this load and these chokes under better conditions but all will kill a turkey at 40 yards.
Here are the results in the order they were shot:
Hevi 13 1st shot (260 in 10")
Tru Glo SSX (222 in 10")
Primos Jellyhead (186 in 10")
Hevi 13 2nd shot (251 in 10")
Hevi 13 3rd shot (228 in 10")
