Working on gobbling with my tube. I usually just use a mouth call for gobbling but have been thinking if I buy a new box I would like to be able to gobble with it too. Is a longbox better than a short box or are they equal. What are your favorite boxes for gobbling, just wanted some ideas, thanks.

Will

I like a two sided short box and have watched Steve Mann, Marlin Watkins and David Holloran on you tube as to how they do it. Different ways in doing it.

Bowguy

I like the longbox better for everything

Both a SB and a LB will gobble.  A SB gobble is a bit "crispier" and a LB gobble, especially if the box is tuned and build well for it by the call maker will gobble like a champ with a deeper/heartier gobble, sounding more realistic especially in the woods.  Certain wood combos gobble much better than others and the inherent tonal qualities of the wood influences if the gobble will be higher or lower pitched.

Well, if a SB I think one of the best is bloodwood over black limba or bloodwood over butternut, if a LB, Bloodwood over Butternut and just about anything with butternut as the body.  You gotta remember though gobbling is only one aspect a box call can do and it's probably one of the least used sounds you will make with it, so don't base your decisions around the gobble, at least not IMO.

Have been playing both for about 35 years. To me, a short box beats a longbox hands down for gobbling!!! One of the best is a walnut over cedar!
I'm not a Christian because I'm strong and have it all together. I'm a Christian because I'm weak and admit I need a Saviour!

A box call is all I've ever used when Gobbling. I prefer the old style calls for gobbling (Turpin-Gibson style) they produce a much deeper sounding gobble that the birds have a hard time staying away from.

I prefer the sound of a long box. Bloodwood lid/mineral poplar or butternut are two great combos IMO.
