I'm a pattern junky like many here and  40 yards is my standard distance.  This year I have decided to make 30 yards my standard and limit shots to that max....I'm already preparing myself to have several birds walk by at 40..?

I guess I don't get this other than if you want more of a challenge or you don't have confidence in your gun/self being able to shoot that far?? Or even terrain. I strive for under 20yd shots and enjoy calling them in close,but if one hangs at the 40yd  mark he's going to be toes up especially with all the improved shells on the market and bench time I have in. Different strokes for different folks...

Totally agree...to each his own.  Gun patterns fine, I just guess I'm challenging myself to try and get one closer knowing that 30 yards is my range.  Something seems lost to me in having these guns that effectively kill at 60 yards...I remember coaxing him in close was what you had to do now it just seems like an option...if he locks up I can kill him anyway.  Funny story a few years ago I moved on this gobbler and he shuts up...after a while guy comes walking up to me and says I spooked the bird...he said he could have killed him at 80 yards with his gun but wanted to watch him some. ( I would not have messed him up intentionally just one of those cases in public land hunting that happens from time to time.)  I told him "Man if you had him in your wheelhouse you should have been pulling the trigger.  You don't know when some yahoo is going to come walking in on you. "  I guess my point is, that each gun has a limit...the question is do we have to max out that limit? Does maxing out the gun cause us to take iffy shots as longer distances just so we don't have to say that we let him just walk off.  Again to each his own, the hunter has to determine what makes the hunt complete and how he sees the game to be played.

Self discipline is good...A few years back, I hunted on Ft. Indiantown Gap, Pa and shot a long beard about my max at 47-50 yards....Shot fired, beard down...though at the time hunting with a Moss 835, felt good about the shot. Good luck.
