Rem 11-87 pre-season prep

I have a Remington 1187 tree-bark with either 21"or 24" inch barrel (cant remember) and I'm wanting to possibly have the forcing cone work done but for sure add optics to it before season begins in the end of March. The POI is a good bit different than the POA and I would rather not keep adjusting for it. I installed a TRS-25 sight on my dads Mossberg last year and really liked it but it was easy since it was already pre-tapped and all. My gun isn't tapped so my question is... in my situation what would you guys do?

I'd skip the forcing cone work and slap a set of Truglo pro-series sights on her and never look back.

Any forcing cone work I've had done has been beneficial n I wouldn't buy a gun without it now.

Skip the forcing cone and mount you a saddle mount with Bushnell Tr 25...these new saddle mounts you can  get one to see your sights...In 40 yards or less with these good shells now your no going to notice that much difference ...or have it drilled..

Dee clean the barrel for certain. I've heard various stories about having the forcing cone worked on and getting the barrel polished. Just about as much good as bad in both cases. In short, I'd clean the barrel and get the saddle mount. Shoot it and then see if you still want to do other work to it.

I really like 11-87s and have been shooting them for many years. There are a few "pre-season" things I would do. First of all, I'd "Deep Clean" the bore http://allaboutshooting.com/blogs/blog/98772615-deep-cleaning-a-shotgun-barrel and the gas system, ports included. I'd take a look a the "O" ring to make sure it's in good shape. I'd pull the trigger group and clean it and the interior of the receiver, remove the bolt and clean it with some good solvent. I would make sure the magazine tube is dry. It's stainless and lube only attracts dirt.

Many POA/POI issues with 11-87s are related to the torque on the magazine cap. I always recommend "hand tight" and then 2-3 clicks with padded pliers. Then I mark the cap and the forearm with something like nail polish so I can always see at a glance that it's in the same position. You may be able to get the POA/POI where is should be by doing this. If you mount a sight on the receiver, either drill and tap or a saddle mount, having that barrel torqued the same is even more important. The POI can move several inches if it's not tightened the same each time.

Had a lot of work done to my 11-87 SP (found it used through the store and was a good deal) to make it into a dedicated "turkey gun" back in the early 90's. Had our gunsmith team get me a smoothbore remchoke cantilever 21" bbl. (was made for slugs) they back bored and lengthened the forcing cone and polished the bore, then was sent to Briley for a custom turkey tube, and off to Color Works for a camo dip (back then they could only do metal work) and I had a walnut stock at the time. I added a Bushnell Trophy 1.75-4x32 CircleX scope that was dipped as well. A few years ago I came across a deal on a ShurShot Stock for the gun.

Gun has a lot of personal value to me, I created something that wasn't available at the time. I was working at a place that customized guns to your needs and I used it as an example for our gunsmith teams work while I was giving seminars on Turkey Hunting.

Do the work, you can't go wrong into making a gun your own!

Oh man!  Clark does the magazine cap stuff also apply to my 870 Super Mag?  Please no, please no, please no....................Might add, it's got a Truglo red dot with the integrated saddle mount.

Yes it does. You can move the POI several inches with different amounts of torque on the cap.The cap is really the only thing that keeps that barrel in the receiver. A loose cap can not only change the POI but also cause a scattering of the shot. To keep the relationship of the receiver and the barrel the same, the cap must be tight and in the same position always.

Love the look of the sure shot stock will be putting one on my 11-87 NWTF 25th anniversary here soon along with Williams fire dot sights going on tomorrow. I cleaned my bore to a mirror finish shine a light in it while looking in it it will hurt your eyes.
