Hello all! New member here. I just recently got an early christmas present from my wonderful wife, a remington 870 SPS turkey/predator. I absolutely love the feel of the gun and I'm super excited about this coming spring. Anyways, i'm wondering if anyone has had much experience with the choke the gun comes with. It is an extended non ported choke that says "wingmaster HD turkey/predator". Remington's site says its a .670 constriction. I'm gonna shoot several 3.5 inch loads through the gun and see what it likes best but I'm going to try to shoot long beard xr. I was wondering if anyone had patterned WLB through this choke or should i go ahead and order a jelly head or a custom choke. Thanks for the advice in advance, this looks like a great site!

Spring Fever

Sorry can't help with that choke, but I would definitely try it before you buy another. You never know.
Also pattern the 3" and 3.5" shell. I was running a Sumtoy .665 in my 870 supermag and it patterned better with a 3" shell than the 3.5", go figure lol
Good luck with it and definitely post pics of your results for us.

First of all, I see that this is your 2nd post (I must have missed your first) so I'd like to welcome you to OG. As you probably know already, it's just a great place with lots of good folks who will welcome you and be of as much help as is possible.

Congratulations both for having a wonderful wife who was so thoughtful and for your early Christmas present of your Remington SPS.

That "Wingmaster HD" choke was I believe originally designed to be used with the Wingmaster HD tungsten-based shotshells. Those shells were produced for a short time in an effort by Remington to get back into the tungsten shot race. They were supposed to take the place of the Remington Hevi-Shot shells that they had quit producing some time before. They used components from other loads, mostly those for steel shot waterfowl loads, including wads and powder with a really beautiful bronze colored tungsten-based shot. The HD choke with the .670 exit diameter was pretty typical of the thinking of the Remington engineers and marketing folks. They always wanted to err on the side of caution.

All of that being said, the HD choke is a pretty good one and it deserves a fair trial before investing in another one. I'd encourage you to "deep clean" the bore and the choke prior to any patterning. it's a simple, inexpensive procedure but well worth the time and effort. It will allow you to see the bore when it's clean and also allow you to see if your bore likes to be clean, slightly fouled or quite fouled. I suggest that after it's cleaned, you shoot without cleaning between shots, until patterns improve or degrade. That will tell the story.

You've also been given some excellent advice about shell length. Most of the time, you'll see better patterns from 3" shells than 3.5" shells and the recoil is substantially less. That will allow you to get back on target more quickly and perhaps prevent you from developing a flinch that will cause to to miss a bird and wonder what happened.

The 3" WLB shell with 1.75 oz of #6 shot is an excellent choice and so is the 3" Hevi-13 shell with 2 oz of #6 shot. I would not get in a real hurry to buy another choke until you put some rounds down range with that HD choke. it will shoot better after it's had several shells through it,

Again, congratulations, welcome and please let us know any time we may be of help in any way.

Thanks,
Clark

Thank you Clark for the excellent advice! I will definitely deep clean and maybe polish the barrel before i start patterning. I've only been on OG for about a week and already I'm learning tons. Thank you all for your time and advice and Merry Christmas from my family to yours! Be safe, and good luck spring 2017

You're welcome. I'll help whenever I can. I'd recommend that you begin with the "deep clean" only. Normally, that's all you'll ever need to get the patterns you want. That' all I ever do to any of my barrels.

My best to you for a Merry Christmas.

Thanks,
Clark
