Fall season

TN fall season opens in the morning. I have been watching a pretty good size flock of hens, jake and jennies. Ranges from 25-30. Went to watch from afar tonight and ended up seeing 9 longbeards and know where they flew up. I am taking my son and was hoping to double up on the hens. To get them thinned out before spring. I have never taken a gobbler in the fall always hens but if I had the chance to double with my son I am going to take it. Really hope the hens make an appearance first.

Knowing that Tennessee's turkey numbers are down, that turkey population mortality is approximately 30% a year and that one bad spring can lead to years of recovery, the idea of "thinning" out hens is definitely one of the most moronic things I've read here on Old Gobbler in a while.

Dead hens don't lay eggs.

I did a little "hen thinning" myself Saturday. I filled my 2nd archery tag after calling in a flock and watched them fight my decoy. Good luck on your hunt.

Fall season opened here in NY on the 17th. Got out yesterday on a ridge that they travel (also where my deer stand is and I was actually bow hunting for deer) and had two very nice gobblers pass by at 42 yards. They were not interested in my calls and the brush was two thick for a shot so I let them pass. Hopefully Monday, I will be able to try at them again

A few countries numbers have been down the last few years. I had over 60 hens on this farm. So yes thinning a few down was a great idea.
