ammo, boots, clothing and what about fishing equipment..

Be careful with knives as a gift...  Surprisingly, a lot of people are superstitious about receiving a knife as a gift (according to superstition, receiving a knife as a gift will "sever" the relationship).  You are supposed to ask for 2ยข from the person you are "giving" the knife to.

Turkey calls make great gifts (someone gets me a good box or scratch box call it will likely be put to use), but I know I am pretty particular about my outdoor equipment...  I end up with a lot of stuff that ends up in the closet.  I tend to either try and pick out something someone wants but does not need, or I give gifts I know they would not get themselves but would enjoy...

Did I do that?

Fly fishermen are born honest, but they get over it.

Might just go back to Mike and get a couple more turkey calls. That's what I'd want if I were them. Heck, I'm not them and still want a few more.

Knowing nothing about their propensity to take care of things, the fishing equipment would be a good idea. Get them a good rod and reel that will last them a long time. A good ugly stick and a penn fierce reel would make a great combo. As far as budget reels go, they are tough. Been using one for saltwater fishing 3 years now and they double as my catfish reels when not at the beach. Been through the war and still keep on ticking. The new fierce II line is sealed up a bit better but the older models are still tough if you can find one still available. If cats or bass are the game a 4000 series is great. If it's mostly trout, step it down. Plan to replace my trout rig with a 3000 series but I like line capacity. The smaller one would do the trick just fine. If they fish, they'll think of you every time they pull the rig out for many years to come.

How about:
A free hunting or fishing license
A renewal or new NRA membership
A "guided" trip with you being the guide and covering expenses.

May be a little different, but what about a journal?  I am so thankful that I started recording memories at an early age.  It's fun now to take a look back in time.  Its even better when you add pictures to the entries, be it hunting, fishing, life, etc.
Pass it on...

I sell several Striker Rollups for Christmas and Birthday gifts, from what I have heard, they work out well for gifts.

Maybe something he hasn't learned to use like cane yelper or wingbone will give him something to do for many months learning a new call

Dr Juice

How about a bottle of scotch?
