Savage 24V anyone??

I have a really nice Savage 24V. It's a .222 over 20ga with a fixed full 3" chamber. It seems every year during spring gobbler season on my farm a coyote comes in just out of shotgun range and considering my feelings for them I usually give them a shot shower just for laughs.  I've been thinking about cutting 2"s off the barrels and installing a screw-in choke and target crown on the rifle barrel. Also I'd do a trigger job and set the barrels to hit the same at, well, not sure what distance but that's the plan so far.  The gun would be used on the farm only and for the purpose of 'maybe' thinning a coyote or two during spring season.

question is...has anyone else set up a 24V similar to what I'm thinking??

I think your meaning its a 223 over a 20 gauge. In out state i'm not sure we can hunt with a rifle like this over a 20 gauge. I really not sure if it's legal in our state. i'm interested in finding out if you can carry a rifle turkey hunting like this in Tenn..From what i understand these guns bring a pretty good price, not sure i would want to mess up the value of the gun.

hey Greg!   not sure if you could ever find a .223 over 20ga from that era and trust me...I'd be beside myself if it were a .223 but no, it's a .222 over 20ga fixed full 3" chamber. Savage did make a .223 over 12ga but the shotgun kicks so hard you'll get a migrane after a couple shots.  the .222/20ga  is the most popular combination for that gun from that period. as for messing with it...I agree, they are very expensive and not common for sale.  If I re-do it, it'll be a keeper for one of my grandsons. giving it a LOT of thought.

Sounds to me like your plan would work. I don't own a 24V but I do own a mid 1970's vintage Tikka/Ithaca LSA 55 o/u Turkey Gun. It's a 222/12 ga. I use it for fall turkey hunting here in Pa. As someone already mentioned we are permitted to hunt with combo guns but it is unlawful to carry single projectile ammo during the spring gobbler season.

Well that's so neat. Never to old to learn. Again i think you have a nice gun to keep and pass down. I just couldn't mess with it over a coyote..

I have a savage 24v. It is a .223/20 gauge. Love that gun. Shot my first few seers with it. I have thought about taking mine turkey hunting but man that would be heavy.

I got the gun on a trade. everything about it is 'period correct'. the scope, rings, base and even the sling mount. it's in pretty dang good condition and giving it an update is something I'm gonna give some serious thought BUT, I think my plan would result in an even more awesome firearm.

nice gun, and still i could do it. It's going to be one of these days you want be able to find another one like it. Really nice gun...

hey Greg.    you might have a valid argument on not tampering with the 24V.  I did some research and considering it's a  'Series B'  and very rare I might just have to put it in someones collection and find me a more common 24.   Gotta really think on this before I take the plunge.

I have a 24v in a .22 Hornet over 20 gauge. Both barrels shot poa/poi. Its my fall turkey gun in MD and WV and throws a great pattern with the Fed HW 7's with the flight control was.
