Several years back (when I was in my teens) on a public area, I had a mid morning gobbler sounding off on his own roughly 300 yards from me. I rushed to the edge of a small food, put out a flambeau hen deke about 30 yards into the food plot (everyone had one of those hideous things...lol), and setup about 5 feet into the woods. I made one soft call and he returned with a triple gobble about 150 yards away.
As I sat there in silence for only a few moments, I caught movement from the opposite direction in the food plot. It was an older man walking towards me. He walked within 10 feet of my deke....no way in hell he could have missed that ugly thing. At that point I did a deep "hey". He stopped, looked straight into my eyes, and marked on. Now remember, I was maybe 17-18...still in HS. I just sat there, dumbfounded. He went to the end of the plot, into the woods, and started calling.
I got up and left. Shortly later, I heard the gobbler closing the distance, then a few minutes later...BOOM!!!
I can assure you that will never happen to me again...one of us will receive butt woopun
