Goose hunting w/ Winchester AA 71/2 shot

Several years ago I was goose hunting w/ my SBE loaded w/ 31/2" steel BB or BBB's.  After the geese quit flying I hauled the decoys to the truck, and since the day was early,  I grabbed some Winchester AA 71/2's to kick fence rows and walk sedge fields for rabbits.  As I worked my way up a weedy draw, Two large Canada's jumped off a pond which I didn't even know was there.  Goose hunting instinct kicked in and I spun and dropped them both dead at @ 30 yards with what later proved to be head shots.  It was only after I had killed both geese that I realized that I had shot them w/ lead AA 71/2's.  In this particular instance,the legality of inadvertently killing waterfowl w/ lead shot aside, Winchester AA lead 71/2's will kill geese, but even when lead shot was legal, and I hunted geese for over 25 years before steel shot was mandated for waterfowl hunting, who hunted geese w/ lead 7 1/2's ?  Robert Ruark said, "Use enough Gun", and the same is applicable to shot size when hunting turkeys.  Hell, if you limit your shots to less than 10 feet, you can kill turkeys w/ lead 12's.

I used to use lead 7.5's for decoyed ducks and I killed a some geese with them too. Like you said, at close range and with head/neck shots, I had more clean kills with them than I did bigger shot at longer ranges.

I remember crushing Greater Canadians at 40-45 yd s with 3" lead #4 copper plated magnums and my trusty Auto 5 Magnum 30" full choke before steel shot came in.

Now we use 10 gauge or 3 1/2" 12 ga with BBB or T shot and I don't  think it is as  effective as my old 3" 4's.

I saw it many moons ago when lead was legal my partner had finished off a crippled greenhead with a factory heavy Blue Magic 7-1/2's and forgot to change back to 3" 5's. He had a canada come over the levee low and he pulled up and crushed him at about 25yds that flipped his head back to his back. We mainly used the 7-1/2's for swatter loads on ducks because of their pattern density out to 40yds.  6's on geese.
