Mouth call fit

So I've been turkey hunting for what will by 5 years (or seasons I guess) this spring.  In all this time, I've tried and failed to get the grasp on mouth calls.  The problem I seem to have is finding a call that fits my mouth, and getting them to fit right.  I have a small palate, and and a narrow one at that (maybe the same depending on how you describe it).  I had a palate expander when I was a kid (before I had braces, and yeah, that thing hurt!!).  The other issue I have is getting it to fit right without ruining the call.  The instructions to me aren't very good, and I can never find any good instructional online on what the proper fit is.

I always have to cut tape off, because the tape contacts my teeth.  But what is the proper way to fit a mouth call?  I've always wanted to learn, because, let's face it, hands-free calling makes for a much easier hunting experience, and it's another call in my arsenal.

Any advice?  Suggestions?  I just picked up a Tom teaser butt naked hen, small frame as well.  This is probably the 3rd or 4th different small frame call I've tried.

Get a small frame call or kids type of you need to. Tape touches my teeth n causes no problems. Scott Hill the NWTF NJ state guy n Quaker boy pro staffer runs his it seems with no or almost no tape.
I think the proper fit is good but it's possible for a good caller to go some each way.
Get Scott Ellis tape n just practice a few years. Took me at least a few before I felt confident.
I ran em on way to work n back, lunchtime, you get the idea. It was years.
Lack of practice is why most guys don't get mouth calls.
Plan on it being a lot, than add time.

I have the same problem with fit, one of the only calls that I've found that fits without having to trim is the Hooks Executioner II.  Give it a try I think you might like it...

I was looking at Hooks calls as well.  May order a few from Midwest Turkey Supply and try them out.

I have the exact same problem. So far the only one I've tried that's comfortable is the promos sonic dome. No trimming for me. Now I'm new to all this, so don't take my word on everything, but from what I've read, it fits my mouth great.

Hooks is a good choice, easy to run n the tape is smaller. In fact if you want full size tape you have to ask for it.

Hey smalls, I'll give you another perspective and it may or may not help you out.  I have some dental work, a bridge,  that prevented me from ever mastering mouth calls fully and i tried a bunch, over about the same amount of years as you when I started.    I wanted to be Walter Parrot dadgumit!  My hunting mentor was pretty straight with me and told me it was not hitting it and the birds ultimately tell the story.  But, I was able to work pot calls acceptably and got good results.  So, I concentrated on strengths and ditched what hindered me.  I can shock gobble with my natural voice and have closed more than a couple birds with my natural voice too. But it takes practice too.  Listening to recordings and try soft light purring for instance.  Just throwing it out for you to consider as you make your way.  I hunt a lot on public and at some point scratching leaves  on the off side can even do the trick with the right elevation and situation.   Not trying to overstep, just offering it up.   Work to your strengths.    Good luck this spring!

No man, it makes sense, and its something I've always struggled with, because mouth calls have been a pain for me.  Every other call I pick up I can run pretty good.  Tube calls, box calls, scratchers, and especially pots....in can run em all.  But I've always felt like, you know, all these big time guys, pretty much all the turkey hunters I know can run mouth calls and run them pretty good.  So, I felt like I needed to learn them.  Like it is the ultimate weapon against turkeys.

But, I've never been any good with them and can never find one that fits good or that I can make sound worth a darn.

Smalls, I'm assuming the call tape is touching the premolars and molars. Is it causing blow-by? Is the frame seating firmly on the roof of your mouth? If you can find one that fits you can talk turkey. I can, so I know anyone else can.

Find one that fits and pin it to the roof of your mouth using the tip of your tongue, push till the reeds are firmly seated between your tongue and the roof. Then send a big gust of air between the tongue and reeds while keeping it pinned to the roof. It will make an awful hi-pitched noise. If you can make that terrible noise with little to no blow-by, you can run a call. Repeat, but half way thru drop your jaw. The rest is simply manipulation of the tongue, jaw, lips, and air pressure.

Best of luck to you!

Gooserbat

Try Gooserbats as my tape is narrow or I have some customers who use the youth frames with good results.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.
