Learning to call

I would like to improve my calling ability before next spring, just wondering if you guys have any recommendations for resources to learn how to really call. I have basic knowledge and can use a mouth call, just not sure I'm using it like I should be. If you have any recommendations for calls, types or brands for a beginner, that would be nice too. Thanks for any advice, and I love the site.

I think Lovett Williams' Real Turkeys audio recordings will be invaluable. Real recordings let you hear what turkeys sound like and you can listen repeatedly. Record yourself so that hear how your calling compares to real turkeys. Good luck!!

Very good advice above. Other options would be just about anything you can get your hands on that plays turkey sounds using the call type you're trying to imitate, like a box or pot call. Check out the sound files on this site for just about any call made. Good luck!

Cabela's sells a cd you set up to a computer, you try and make the same call as the instructor and it will tell you what you need to do to make the correct sound. As far as calls go, a slate pot call is easy, push pin, or a box call. Since you can operate a mouth call, keep working on it as well.

You got some good timing go out now find some fall birds especially off roost just listen learn have your call with you and practice best teaching you'll ever get

Thanks a lot guys , that friction wood call looks interesting. I wouldn't mind have a good box call, any recommendations? Another thing, I hunt public land and hearing birds is not very common, at least when season is in. Does this change your calling pattern?

Tree Top Turkeys is the CD I used to listen to Live turkeys.  Then I went out a bought a hand held voice recorder at Wally World and started practicing with the recorder everyday.  What I found out by using the recorder is I thought I sound like a turkey to my ears but the recorder told me what I really sounded like.  It helped me to define my yelps, cutts, clucks and purrs and helped me to tone down my calling.  Scott Ellis's Mouth Call Magic is also a great teaching tool for using mouth calls.  Keep practicing and never stop learning new techniques.

Another of the wall approach that worked well for me is just calling to domestic turkeys. We raised turkeys when I was a child and I spent hours with them. Also if you want to use a diaphragm there is no better time than driving to and from work. Your significant other will appreciate it as well.
