This forum seems to be based upon spreading the good word on calls so I figured i should give a shout out. Last month a few friends gave me a JL Custom Turkey Call padauk and cherry box call. Great gift.
The finish is clear satin with no drips, runs, or dust spots. The styling is simple and the side of the box have decorative cuts which also help with the grip. The brass pivot screw is unmarred. Aesthetically, the box is a 10 out of 10.
Looks are important but I'll take a great sound over a great look. This call is also easy to play. Yelps, clucks, purrs and cuts can be made at different volumes. My 11 y.o. son picked it up and had no problem running it. What has been the most impressive part is the way the paddle holds chalk. The call has been living in my car (so I can practice when waiting for the kids to finish after school activities) for the past month and I have yet to reapply chalk. If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery I need to find the same chalk or how they finish the paddle to keep it so able to remain covered.
Opening day here in VT isn't until the beginning of May and this call is definitely going into the woods with me.
