Weaver no gunsmith saddle mount
February 29, 2012, 08:32:29 PM
I was looking at the weaver saddle mount today to put on my 11-87 20 ga along with a BFF or Mueller red dot. I was wondering if anyone has one and can say how it has worked for them. My main concern is that it's plastic and I've seen a few bad reviews about the plastic stripping. Any + or - about them other than the plastic part. Thanks in advance

There is no plastic to strip. I've got one on my mossy. The action pin is replaced by by a bolt and nut. Mine fits great, and holds tight.

B-square makes one spefically for the Remington 20 ga.. It is made out of aircraft grade aluminum. and not plastic. I had one of the weaver saddle mounts on my 1187 and did not like it. The weaver's are made to fit the 12 ga models and just give you a couple of shims , so you can use it on the 20. It looked and felt like crap, so i gave it away.

I had the B-squared on mine and liked it alot. I know that doesnt answer your question but maybe gives you a good alternative to consider...

I had a saddle mount on a BPS 3 1/2 12 ga. I did not like it. When patterning it and when my hands were dry, the recoil would cause the saddle mount to cut my hands. I ended up wearing a wool glove with the fingers cut out. This helped but I really did not like it. I finally got it drilled and tapped.

Ive got the weaver converta mount. Its not metal, but I didnt have any issues with it. I read some of the negative reviews online...and most looked like operator error to me.
I like its low profile and light weight. B square makes a fine product and being metal it would last a lifetime.

A word of caution is that you can tighten the bolts so tight that it puts tension on the receiver to the point that it will not function properly. Be aware.

My B-square for my 20 gauge 1187 came with plastic shims to make it work with the thinner receiver. And it sucks hitting your fingers on the mount when pulling the charging handle to load the gun. :-(
Well just checked and maybe it is the Aimtech version and not the b-square.

I had a weaver saddle mount on my 11-87 20ga. It worked but, I noticed the rail that the sight mounted onto would flex a little. If you put sideways pressure on the rail it would move. Also one of the pockets that hold the nuts stripped and would not hold nut/keep it from turning. As mentioned above if you tighten the bolts to tight the action will not function right. I took it off and had the gun drilled & tapped for a rail.
I have a B-Square on my 12ga. and it is solid as a rock. It actually sits tight on top the receiver and their is no "flexing" in it. I don't know if it would fit that tight a 20ga. or if they make one specifically for a 20ga. I would spend the extra money for a B-square or an Aimtech(both made of metal) instead of the plastic weave saddle.

Have a b-square on by 11-87 20 gauge and it works well. As others said tighten the bolts too tight and the action gets restricted.

I recently installed a B-Square saddle mount on my 870 Express Compact 20ga. The mount fit the gun perfectly, but a Burris FF3 sight would not clamp on the Weaver rail. The grover in the mount wasn't wide or deep enough to accommodate the long threaded stud on the underside of the sight. I had to take a file and make the grove wider and deeper. Once that was done all went well. I used some Aluminum Black to cover the freshly filed area and it looks good and is corrosion protected. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
